On A Roll Novak Djokovic

Can this man not lose?
As the French Open tennis tournament starts, there is only one question on the minds of all tennis lovers. And this is whether Novak Djokovic's winning streak will finally come to an end in this tournament.
Novak Djokovic has been winning all his games since the beginning of the year.He has not lost a tennis match in 2011.He is currently standing at 37 straight wins.During this streak Djokovic has won 7 singles titles and has accounted for the current World No 1 - Raphael Nadal - on the four occassions that they have played each other.
Whether you are his fellow tennis player or an armchair tennis fan,you cannot help but admire the guy.It is the kind of performance that makes people eagerly look forward to his next game, wondering if this is the one where his streak will come to an end.And when it doesn't,you cheer him on.
For the staticians out there, this winning streak is only bettered by that of John McEnroe, who went 42 matches without loss at the beginning of 1984.
We hope that Novak Djokovic's winning streak continues during the French Open.We wish, too, that he attains that World No 1 spot currently occupied by Raphael Nadal. Not that we have anything against Nadal. He is a fine tennis player as well. But a fairy tale run like this one of Djokovic is  so inspiring that we all wish it never ends. Also,it would be a wonderful moment to witness the baton of tennis greatness being passed from one player to the next.

Our FEEL GOOD poem:

Carry On 'Djo'
___________

Don't stop now!
Keep going 'Djo'.
The McEnroe 42-0,
The World No 1,
Are at an arm's lenth.
Keep at it 'Djo'.
Immortality,
On the tennis field,
In history books,
Is beckoning.
Tennis fans,
The world over,
Are behind you.
Carry on 'Djo'.

All This Love From Political Parties

* Us voters here is South Africa gettiing a lot of 't-c' from political parties this week.We were highly in demand. We were 'hot property',ladies and gentlemen.

This love hipped on voters is not surprising. This coming Wednesday - 18th May - South Africans are going to the polls to elect our local government representatives. In an attempt to make us vote for them, political parties of all shapes and sizes were falling over themselves to impress us.
They were all over the neighbourhoods.Their people knocked on our doors. They distributed pamphlets. They even invited us to their political rallies to read us their manifestos.

All this attention felt really nice.We do,however, wish that it came more often. We wish to see politicians come calling in our 'hoods' on regular basis. To come visit us only during elections time makes it too obvious that they are doing it to entice us to vote for them on Wednesday. It is difficult to take someone seriously who only comes around every five years.
If this was about winning over a lady's hand in a romantic relationship, all these political parties would have failed.

Having said that,we do,however, still have to go out there and exercise our democratic right to vote.
So who do we vote for?
We believe that local government elections today are about living conditions in our backyards. They are about dialectical materialism in communism speak. So the real question is whether you are getting the service that you deserve from your current local representative. Are your street lights only being put up now?Is an attempt to tar your dirt roads only being made now?All of this happening 17 years after you voted someone into office.
Let us show political parties that we can vote them out of power if they are not delivering.

Whoever we are going vote for on Wednesday, let us go out there and vote in our numbers. To choose not vote is not on.It took a lot of pain for us to get this right to vote.

Our FFEL GOOD poem of the week:

Love Me Always
_______________

Tell me that you love me,
That you adore me,
Not only on Wednesdays.
Show me affection,
Not only during elections.
Display your admiration,
Your infatuation,
Every day.
Love me at all times,
And not just sometimes.
Be attentive,
Give me 't-c',
Daily.
Not just when I must give.
Love me always,
All the time.

The End of Terror as We Know It?

* A sense of relief around the world after the death of Osama Bin Laden. The al-Qaeda leader was fatally wounded in a shootout with United States troops in Abbottabad,Pakistan.

Without necessarily rejoicing at the death of another human being,we do hope that al-Qaeda will lose its steam now that its leader is gone.
al-Qaeda as a terror group was responsible for some of the most gruesome killings in recent times.Notably, the 2001 attacks by hijacked planes on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in the United States which resulted in the death of atleast 3000 people.

The world is sharing the sense of relief with the US because al-Qaeda in its declared war against the US had no misgivings about attacking other countries with US links. The bombings of US embassies in Africa in 1998 - which were alledgedly carried out by al-Qaeda - led to the death of 231 people who were not necessarily all Americans.
Europe, too, experienced its own form of 9/11.Britain and Spain were attacked by al-Qaeda-linked groups at some stage.

Here is hoping that al-Qaeda loses its potency as a terror group now that its leader is no longer around.Even better, here is hoping that the group sees reason and realizes that terror is not the solution.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

A World Less Terrified
____________________

A world more at peace,
More at ease.
Is it here?
Here and now?
A world without terror,
With no fear,
Today?
A calmer world,
A safer world,
Is beckoning.
It's there for the taking.
Can we embrace it?
Now.
Please.

17 Years of Democracy In South Africa

Freedom Day this past Wednesday(27th April) marking seventeen years that South Africans have enjoyed democracy.
That we have been able to choose our government through the ballot for seventeen years now,is something to be celebrated. It is something to be cherished, especially considering where we come from as a country. The previous system of apartheid allowed a small group of South Africans - whites - to practice democracy amongst themselves while it prohibited the majority - Africans - from exercising this right to vote for a government.
During this celebrating of the arrival of democracy,we must also remember what it took to get us here. And it is not just members of political entities who made sacrifices.South Africans of all hues and shades played their part. They payed a price to give us our freedom.Ordinary people who observed June 16(now known as Youth Day) in pre-democracy days by staying away from work to commemorate events of that day,and were subsequently disciplined by their employers for this stay away, must also be acknowledged.
And while we celebrate our own democracy here in South Africa, our thoughts must also go to the peoples of the Arab world who are currently fighting to free themselves from tyrannical rulers. In particular,we want to tell the people of Libya,Yemen, and Syria to hang in there.

       "One day you,too,shall be free."

Our FEEL GOOD poem:

This Democracy
___________

It's been fought for,
And died for,
This democracy.
It must be valued,
And worshiped.
Treat it with respect,
Treat it with care.
This democracy of ours,
Perpetuate,
On 18 May.
