THE YEAR THAT WAS - 2010

*IN SOUTH AFRICA

- The FIFA World Cup coming to Africa for the first time in its history.And this tournament being held here in South Africa.By all accounts Mzansi doing an excellent job in hosting it.This hosting also getting to unite the country like never before.

For us an abiding image of this tournament was this one instance where a camera moved from the football field to go to the stands where it captured former USA President Bill Clinton and Rolling Stones' leading man Mick Jagger having a chat while watching the game.After this shot,it had then dawned that the world is indeed here.


*AROUND THE WORLD

1. The release from house arrest of the Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi,which brought joy not only to the people of Burma but to all freedom loving people around the world.It was a release that gave the people of Burma hope that things can get better.

2. The Nobel Prize Committee standing firm in its decision to award this year's Nobel Peace Prize to the jailed Chinese dissident -Mr Liu Xiaobo .He was given the prize for his fighting for basic human rights in his home country.China responded to this awarding by complaining and making threats.To which the Prize Committee said,"Suit yourself".
A nice touch from the Committee was an empty chair at the awards ceremony where Liu Xiaobo would have sat if he was not behind bars.


*ON A PERSONAL NOTE

1. The decision by yours truly to leave my 9 to 5 job to go and focus on the Feel Good Movement project.Admittedly it has been a difficult year.Even painful at times.But I have no regrets.I have learned a lot in this period.
There is no 'ho checha ha ramo' here.I am going forward.
While at it,I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to my family(Shadrack,Duduzile,Teboho,Thato and Tumelo) for the hardship that this 'going on my own' thing caused them.I will make it up to you guys.Of this,I have no doubt.

2. The support we are continuing to get from my 'kasi'(Protea North) people as far as the buying of our FGM t-shirts is concerned.It has been humbling to see most of them buying the t-shirts without even first checking what our website was all about.They simply took my word for it.

"Much appreciated,ladies and gentlemen."

T P Mazembe Making Africa Proud, A Call for our Public Libraries to Stay Open for Longer, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 17'.

* T P Mazembe becoming the first African football club side to reach the Club World Cup final.
On Tuesday this team from the Democratic Republic of Congo defeated the champions of South America -Internacional(from Brazil) - by 2 goals to nil,in the first semi-final game played in Abu Dhabi.
They will be meeting Italy's Inter Milan - the winner of the other semi-final - in the final tonight.
Their 'first' on behalf of Africa ofcourse echoed another 'first' for Africa earlier this year when South Africa hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time on African soil.
As the year 2010 ends,the African football flag is still flying high indeed.
Here is hoping that T P Mazembe can go all the way and win against Inter in tonight's game.
We wish them really well.


* The Sunday Times columnist - Lihle Z Mtshali - making a call for our public libraries to stay open for longer hours.She did so this past Sunday(12/12/10) in her column(New York State of Mind) entitled "The little things that bring such joy to US life".In here she wrote that it was such a pleasure for her to discover that the New York City public libraries are open on Saturday afternoons.
She urged that our South African public libraries should do so too,to encourage a culture of reading in the country.
We could not agree with Ms Mtshali more.In addition,we wish to see the township public libraries filled not only with people who are there to study or do scholarly research,but also filled with people who are there to read for pleasure.People should go to our 'kasi' libraries to 'chill' with a book,just like they do other recreational activities like 'braaing' or watching a soccer game.


ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 17

* Trying to collect some due payments at this time of the year for FGM Ts taken is proving to be a quite a challenge.I seem to be competing for the same resources that are needed for Christmas shopping.I am competing with Christmas gifts and groceries.
As a result I did not get most of the payments I expected.Some people made a plan however.For example this one customer payed me with some Shoprite vouchers they were given for free at work.
Cash would have been better ofcourse,but when the going is this tough I can take most forms of payment.
I say most forms because I would definitely draw a line at being payed with food items.

Developments in the Dewani case, Required Listening on Wednesday Nights, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 16'.

* Some clarity now in the Anni Dewani murder case.After weeks of speculation that the killing of Mrs Dewani in a highjacking incident in the Gugulethu township had more questions than answers to it,we now know that her husband -Shrien Dewani - had something to do with it.This is according to one of the arrested suspects - Zola Tango - who has agreed to become a state witness in this case.
The Dewani couple is from Britain and was visiting South Africa.
There is a sense of relief that Anni Dewani's own family will now know the real motive for her murder when the case goes to court.
There is relief also on our side - as South Africans - that this despicable crime as not as straight forward as 'another tourist is killed in South Africa'.We may have a challenge around crime, yes,and we are certainly doing our best to get on top of it,but we do not need outsiders to come here and make the situation worse.


* 5FM is the place to be on Wednesday nights between 10pm and 12 midnight.
In a show called Powernights DJs Fresh and Euphonik interview 'happening' DJs.During this show the invited DJs let lose and talk about how they got started in the industry.Even if one is not really into the 'house music' scene,you will still love the stories of how these guys 'made it',so to speak.As self-employed agents DJs are no different to entrepreneurs.Their stories of struggle and hardship in this highly competitive field are uplifting.And the invited DJ's choice of 5 significant songs/tunes/tracks - in their opinion - further adds to the allure of this show.
And to DJ Fresh we say:
"Powernights(Wednesday editions) brings back memories of 'The Chair'.
And oena,Fresh, you are a gift to the radio industry in this country."


* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 16
I must admit that to go out and sell when you know that you do not really have the stock does not feel the same.The urge to sell is not really as strong.On one hand you want to generate those leads.But on another you have this fear that someone may actually want to take a T there and then,which you will not have.The result being that you will end up 'crying' over a lost sale.
Besides these 'lost sales',I also meet people who are waiting fot the Ts that they have ordered.And inevitably they will ask if I have have received my new stock yet.
The way I see it, at this rate,my story of 'waiting for my new stock' will eventually wear thin.
I have therefore decided to reduce the number of days that I am on the 'sales beat'.For now I will go out only on three days - Mondays,Tuesdays and Wednesdays.On these days I do not normally meet that many people on the streets.
This kind of 'hiding strategy' will help to keep my leads generation momentum going,but at a low rate. At the same time it will shield me from all the 'enquiries',so to speak.That is,until my new stock arrives.

The Act of Forgiving, A 'Mpama' for Real Madrid from Barcelona FC, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 15'.

* As we start the festive season proper(December month) here are a few words to ponder on
forgiveness.This extract is from an excellent report on gratitude called The Astonishing Power of Gratitude,written by Wes Hopper(www.horncreek.com).Each time we read this report we are highly inspired.Inspired to become better human beings.The section in the report on forgiveness is losely quoted below:
"Forgive everyone who ever did anything you have been carrying a
grudge about.The guy who cheated you in that business deal.The sister-in-law
who never repaid the R50.The teacher who gave you the 'F' that you didn't deserve.The
ex-spouse who dragged you through the ugly and expensive divorce.Everyone.Anything.
Forgiveness is not something that you do for the other person,it is something you do for
yourself.
Remember that the Universe works by law,not by chance.There are no coincidences in the
people that show up in our lives.And becuase the Universe is friendly,these people don't
show up to punish us,but often to teach us."


* Here in Mzansi we call a five-fingered clap on the face a 'mpama'.This past Monday night Barcelona FC - our favourite team in Europe - gave their archrivals Real Madrid FC a 'mpama'.They hammered them 5-0 in a La Liga football game.In the process 'Barca' made all of us who are fans deliriously happy.
In a game that Mourinho - the Real Madrid coach - will never ever forget,Barcelona gave his team a footballing lesson.'Barca' didn't just win by a big margin,but they did so while toying with the Madrid players.Fans at Nou Camp - Barcelona's home ground where the game took place - and those watching from around the world were thoroughly entertained.
Now,can Mourinho and his star player - Ronaldo - please shut up,"Quietly enjoy your humble pie."
And how about this joke doing the rounds:
Ronaldo(Real Madrid star player) :"God sent me to earth to teach people how to play football."
Lionel Messi(Barcelona star player):"I didn't send anyone."


* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 15
Two things happened this week that got me excited.The first one was having two people who have FGM Ts already expressing interest in buying another t-shirt.They wanted this T in a different colour to their previous ones.
To hear that people love our Ts so much that they want a second one was humbling.
The second good happening was when a friend I had told about our Ts and given our flyer to - maybe six months ago - phoning me out of the blue to order not one,but two FGM t-shirts.This telephonic ordering was a first.I nearly fell off my chair.
This order out of the blue further emphasised the value of telling as many people as you can about the stuff that you are 'pushing'.Sometime down the line they may still get back to you to buy.
In both cases above I did not have the prefered sizes and colours.Infact,my current stock of t-shirts is now finished.But while I wait for my next stock - possibly after the December holidays because the factories are also winding down for Christmas - I will continue to pound the streets.I am carrying one sample t-shirt in my bag.It is important to keep the momentum of getting leads going.These I can then follow up on once the new stock arrives.

Thinking of the New Zealand Mine Tragedy Families, Saying No To Violence, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 14'.

* Our thoughts being with the Greymouth town people in New Zealand who lost their loved ones on Wednesday.A second underground gas explosion at the Pike River mine in that town resulted in the loss of the 29 miners who had been trapped underneath.
It can't have been easy to accept the news when just a few days before this fatal explosion there were high hopes that the miners may just be rescued.
We are with the grieving families in spirit.
In retrospect,the recent rescue of the 33 Chilean miners under similar circumstances being a true miracle that we should all be really greatful for.

* ON THE FGM TS SALES FRONT - PART 14
As we approach the end of the month I am starting to practice my smiling.I am going to need it.
I know I am going to have instances where a payment for a t-shirt taken does not come through.Or have an instance where a 'definite' lead - someone who assured me they will buy a T - does not buy when I arrive with the T.
I smile through all of this.I do this despite feeling let down.
If there is one thing I have learned so far through selling t-shirts,it is that one should never 'lose it',or give ultimatums when someone does not come through for you as promised.If you do,it results in this tension that makes going to that particular house again a stress-filled affair.Ultimately,it can even lead to someone refusing to pay altogether.
It is much,much better to receive paymnt,or have someone take a t-shirt,even if it is three months down the line.And this will only happen if one is polite and patient throughout the repeated let downs.

Local Pick'n Pay Star Cashiers, Emails from bo-Mpho Kgomo, 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 13'

* She looks up when you get to her till.Then as she greets you,she smiles.This is Millicent Peloeng.She is a cashier at the Protea North Pick'n Pay.
This kind of attentiveness to customers from a 'check out' lady is refreshing.
Most cashiers are OK.In some instances,however,you do feel like you are just a number that they need to process quickly and get out of the way.The greeting may be there,but it is done with no ethusiasm..
Not with Millicent.Most of the time she is really 'there' with you.
If you happen to land in my neighbourhood,and you end up at our Pick'n Pay,ask for Millicent.
Tell her I sent you.


* This email that we received from Mpho Kgomo.This parable touches on what the expression - 'ubuntu' - is really about.

"A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see a farmer and his wife open a package.
'What food might this contain?',the mouse wondered.
He was devasted to discover that it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard,the mouse proclaimed this warning:
'There is a mousetrap in the house!'
The chicken clucked and scratched,raised her head and said,'Mr Mouse,I can tell that this is
of great concern to you,but it is of no consequence to me.I cannot be bothered by it.'

The mouse then turned to the pig and told him,
'There is a mousetrap in the house!'
The pig sympathised,but said,'I am very sorry Mr Mouse,but there is nothing I can do about it.'

The mouse turned to the cow and said,
'There is a mousetrap in the house!'
The cow said,'Wow Mr Mouse,I am sorry for you,but it's no skin off my nose.'

So,the mouse returned to the house,head down and dejected,to face the farmer's mousetrap...alone.
That very night a sound was heard throughout the house.It was a sound of a mousetrap catching
its prey.The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught.In the darkness,she did not see it.
It was a venomous snake whose tail was caught in the trap.And the snake bit her.

The farmer rushed her to the hospital.
When she returned home she still had a fever.Everyone knows that you treat fever with a fresh
chicken soup.So the farmer took his knife to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued.Friends and neghbours came to sit with her around the clock.
To feed them,the farmer butchered the pig.
But,alas,the farmer's wife did not get well.........she died.

So many people came for her funeral that the farmer had to slaughter the cow in order to provide
the meat for all of them at the funeral luncheon.

And the mouse looked upon it all,from the crack in his wall,with great sadness.It was instructive though.Next time his neighbour has a problem,he will never say it's not his problem.

Each of us is a vital thread in one another's life.When one of us is threatened,we are all at risk."


* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 13

This week I had to contend with the elements.It rained at the beginning of the week.This forced me to stay indoors.This was a setback of sorts.When the week starts I am usually raring to go.Going out on the streets every day is a form of work for me,like those who do 9-5.If I don't work,I won't earn.

So what does one do when stuck indoors?Well,I did some reading.I am currently reading a book called
A Google Story by David Vise.This book is highly recommended.It is about how Google - the search engine company - started,and how it got so big so quickly.

By the end of the week the rain had cleared up however.With these clear and beautiful blue skies,I hit the ground running.I wanted to make up for the lost days.And my hard work paid off.I sold
two FGM t-shirts.This was really good.The last time I sold two t-shirts in one week was more than a month ago.
It must rain more often,I told myself.

Suu Kyi's Release, Eskom's Bounce Back, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 12'

* News that Aung San Suu Kyi - the pro-democracy leader in Burma - has been released from house arrest.She was released yesterday by the junta that runs Burma(or Maynmar).
We are as delighted as the Burma people about her eventual release.
Ms Suu Kyi had been under house arrest on and off since 1990 when her party - the National League for Democracy - won the national elections in that country.The army had then ignored this result and had continued the running of the country like before.Suu Kyi was put under house arrest.
Since then Suu Kyi - who is a Mandela-like figure for the people of Burma - had sort to bring back democracy to her country by using peaceful means.And her efforts were recognised by no less than the Nobel Prize Committee which gave her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.
Her release is something to feel good about.It's something to shout about.


* Eskom - our electricity supplier - doing a reasonably good job in recovering after a power failure here in my 'kasi' - Protea North.
Our electricity went down this past Tuesday afternoon.For some reason only certain areas of the neighbourhood were affected.And I happen to live in one of these affected areas.
Needless to say,this schism in electrity supply led to all kinds of jokes.The residents of the 'lights on' areas said that we - in the 'dark areas' -don't pay our electricity bills.People also said that the dark and depressing days of 'load shedding' are back with a vengeance.
Our electricity did finally come back.The next morning.To Eskom's credit,even during the 'lights out' period one could tell that someone was working on the problem,because electricity would come back but only to immediately go off again.


* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 12

It is getting easier and easier for me to approach people and pitch to them,I am finding out.No doubt this comes from doing this every day.More than this growing confidence,I am loving the way I am making friends.Before I started selling the t-shirts I used to be aware that,for example,a certain individual stays in my 'kasi' by being familiar with their face.And when we met we did not necessarily greet each other.But now - after I had 'cold called' them previously - when we meet we greet each other.Not only this,now I even know most of my 'kasi' residents by name.This is because when I make my sales pitch I first introduce myself and then go:

"Nna ke bua le mang?"

In some instances when I meet them again we don't even talk about my t-shirts.We talk about other things.This is how I have 'bumped' into people I share interests (like reading) with.

Even if we do not get to sell those 47 million t-shirts,personally I would have enjoyed this experience of getting to know people.And this - I swear - is not a cop out.

A Flurry of Activity for Good Causes, Elvis Blue's Heartening Gesture, And 'On the FGM Ts Sales Front- Part 11'

* Corporate South Africa starting the ball rolling as far as doing something for charities is concerned.This is just as well because the season of giving is almost upon us.
There was the Shell Select Charity Challenge that ran on 5FM recently.The challenge was to raise a total of R500,000 for charities.And the radio station DJs competed with each other to see who could raise the most money for their favourite good cause.
Also,Vodacom - the cellular network provider - has started its 'Change The World' campaign.Here South Africans with skills are invited to donate themselves - so to speak - to 10 designated charities for a period of six months.They are to offer their skills to these charities duing this period.And while they are at it Vodacom will pay for their upkeep.The charities will be getting this skillful help for free.

The man on the street cannot but be moved by these initiatives to reach out too to charities.


* The winner of Mnet's 'IDOLS' singing reality contest - Elvis Blue(real name Jan Hoogendyk) - blowing us all away not only with his singing,but with his decision to give half of his R500,000 cash first prize to his fellow finalist - Lloyd Cele.Lloy Cele would have apparently have done same had he won.
The decision to go 50/50 on the first prize money - irrespective of who won - was taken by the two contestants before they went for their final showdown in the show's finale.

This week I saw some signs that my hard work of pounding the streets of my neighbourhood - Protea North - selling FGM Ts is starting to pay off.On more than one occasion I did a sales pitch to a prospect who when I finished went,

"Ja,I saw 'so and so' wearing your t-shirt."

On one particular day - Friday - I had two people tell me this.Needless to say,hearing this from a potential buyer leaves one feeling very good.Because then they are likey to buy a T.If not there and then,then at some future date.

To bo-Amakipkip et al, we say 'watch out'.The FGM Revolution is HERE.It's in my 'kasi' of Protea North today.Tomorrow we take the whole country.Afterwhich, it is the world.

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation, Quotes for those who Dare to Dare, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 9'.

* Former President - Thabo Mbeki - lauching his Foundation last week.It is to be called The Thabo Mbeki Foundation.It's main aim is to help make this century(21st) a century for Africa.The Foundation will help Africans make a lasting contribution to the world.A contribution that the world will remember the continent by.
There is no more suited person to help make this renewal of Africa a reality.Mr Mbeki - even when still in office - has always been passionate about making Africa great again.Now that he is 'free' - so to speak - he is in a better position to go after one of his cherished dreams.
We would like to wish Mr Mbeki well in this latest undertaking of his.And we are fully behind you ntate.It's about time Africa shone once again.


* Encountering this truly inspirational quote about people who dare to dream big.It was in a TIME magazine issue of last year(2009).This was a special year-ending edition referred to as 'Person of the Year'.This quote appeared in the column('In the Arena') by Joe Klein.It went
something like this:

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 9

This past week pounding the streets selling FGM Ts was particularly trying.Earlier in the week it was blazing hot outside.Temperatures here in Jozi were around 30 degrees.Trying to sell to passers by in this heat was no joke.Nobody was willing to stand even for even a second in the sun to hear my sales pitch.In some instances I was lucky.There would be a tree nearby and this where I gently guided my prospect.

If the heat was not enough of a hindrance,my legs started to ache also.The daily walking on hard surfaces was taking its toll.
Maybe,just maybe,the idea of sitting in one spot with a table of your wares is not so bad after all.In this case atleast one gets to sit the whole day.If the scorching summer heat continues I may just consider this option.For now though the street walking continues.

As if taking taking a cue from my complaining above,this week saw no movement on the FGM Ts sales front.After four weeks of selling atleast one T a week,I sold nothing this week.
What did they say about the Law of Attraction again?

A Golden Boy's Time in Delhi, Resourceful Budding Entrepreneurs, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 8'.

* A nice touch from South Africa's golden boy - Cameron van der Burgh - at the Commonwealth games that are currently being held in India.After winning gold in the 100 meter breastroke swimming event he raised his two hands to display the phrase - 'KE NAKO'.This phrase means 'IT'S TIME' in the Sesotho langauge.
And ofcourse this phrase was used as FIFA's slogan during the recent football World Cup held here in South Africa.
As to why Cameron had it written inside the palms of his two hands we can only speculate.We are going to give it our best shot:

a) KE NAKO for Cameron to win some gold.
or
b) IT'S TIME for South Africa to top the medals count in these games.
or
c) KE NAKO for Africa - as represented by South Africa,amongst others -
to really do well at these games.
or
d) All of the above.

"Nice one Cameron."


* A neighbourhood barber - Rashido - showing some enterprise in setting up his hair cutting place.
Instead of looking for a place to rent to house his business,Rashido simply erected a tent-like structure and had it attached to a church fence.For electricity to power his hair cutting machines he uses a portable electricity generating 'thingi' that runs on this big battery.
A chair or two inside this tent completes his shop.
My man here has no rent worries.And because he is cheap at R10 a haircut('chiskop'),business is brisk.But be warned,his haircut has no frills.After cutting your hair there is nothing like washing your head with a nice smelling shampoo etc etc,like they do at a hair salon.But for R15 saving - 'ekasi' hair salons can charge as much as R25 for a 'chiskop' - I can happily do this head-washing myself when I get home.
To all the Rashidos who have no excuses for not 'getting on with it':'big up' to you guys.


* ON THE FGM TS SALES FRONT - PART 8

On this daily beat of pushing FGM Ts in my 'kasi',I am getting to be friends with my fellow hawkers.
There are the vegetable guys - bo-Msoja.These are the guys who load a trolley with vegetables and push it around the neighbourhood.As they move around they constantly blow this trumpet-like whistle to alert residents of their passing by.
With my 'smaller-nyana' sling bag containing 3 to 4 t-shirts,I still have it relatively easy compared with these guys pushing laden trolleys.These guys work hard.

Then you have guys like bo-Freddy.He makes hand made Afro-themed artefacts.You will find Freddy with a table full of his wares next to the local Pick'n Pay entrance on some days.
Also, there are bo-Joshua,who sells hand-crafted lady earrings door to door.

Each time we 'bump' into each other we share our respective selling experiences.Most importantly,we encourage each other.

The Show Going On in India, DJ Black Coffee's Marathon Playing, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 7.

* The Commonwealth Games in Delhi(India) going ahead today.They are starting inspite of the tons of negative publicity the host nation received vis-a-vis its readinesss to host these games.There were complaints about the unfinished athletes village.There were also concerns about security in India.It was said that the participating athletes may become targets for terror groups.Because of this latter concern some individual athletes went as far as withdrawing from the games.
That the games will be starting as scheduled today is a testament to the Indian government's best efforts to get its act together around the games' organization.'Big up' too,to the various athletic associations of the the Commonwealth countries for showing their support for the games by pitching up despite the concerns.
The chance to host such games doesn't come often,therefore the people of India need all our support.


* DJ Black Coffee making Mzansi proud last Sunday.He attempted to set a new World Record for non-stop dj-ing.He played for a solid 60 hours non-stop at the Moponya Mall last week.He started playing his set from Thursday(23/9/10) midnight and went all the way to Sunday(26/9/10).In terms of the rules he was allowed some small breaks(20 minutes) after every 4 hours of continuous playing.
All of this playing was for a charitable cause.He was raising funds for his newly launched DJ Black Coffee Foundation,which is going to focus on helping disabled people.
We would like to congratulate Nkosinathi Maphumulo(Black Coffee's real name) for this fine achievement.The people from Guiness must still officially pronounce on this World Record,but we have no doubt that it is just a matter of time before they to do so.
With this feat DJ Black Coffee has thrown the gauntlet to all of us South Africans.What other World Record can we have a go at?


* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 7

So which is better,active selling or passive selling?
By active selling I mean an instance where you actualy ask people - by addressing them - to buy your products.Passive selling,on the other hand,is when you have a stand displaying your wares and are hoping that the passing traffic will buy from you.
In my short experience of selling FGM Ts on the streets I believe that with active selling one is able to move more products.Having said that,with this type of selling you do get more 'in your face' rejections.So one has to have a thick skin.Personally,I will take active selling any day over passive selling.What I have learned is that when you ask people to buy from you they may not necessarily do so there and then,but they will tell you when to come.With passive selling,creating a lead is not in your hands.You rely on the prospect deciding to stop by to inquire.

After that postulation I am sure I am expected to say that I sold hundreds of FGM Ts this week.Eh!...not exactly.In due course I will.But this week being blown away by the way a customer(Bra Sam) placed his faith in me.When it occured that I didn't have the FGM t-shirt in his prefered size and colour,he decided to give me the money all the same,saying that I can bring the t-shirt when my new stock arrives.I was speechless,and really grateful.This was the first time that such a thing has happened to me in my t-shirt selling life.

Conversations with bo-Tebogo, Fascinating Books on Success, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 6'.

* Getting a chance to speak to a gentleman called Tebogo.He is the guy who sells car stickers at the robots next to the BP garage here in my 'kasi'(Protea North).He regaled me with tales of what it is like to sell stuff to passing motorists.For example,how some drivers pull up their windows when he approaches.And he was quite philosophical about such things.He admitted that it comes with his territory.
But what I really admired about Tebogo was how hard he works.He is at these robots from 9am to 6pm almost every day.And he does all this selling while standing on his feet.
It occured to me that if some of us could work even half as hard as Tebogo does we could indeed go far
in life.

"Thanks for the inspiration,Tebogo."


* Finishing my reading of the book - OUTLIERS -by Malcolm Gladwell.And being hugely motivated by it.In this book Mr Gladwell explores some theories about what makes people successful.With a lot of statistics to back up his theories,he tries to show that most of the really successful people in the world don't become so in isolation.In other words,there are always certain factors that help them along the way.These factors could be things like their family history,or the fact that when they made it there was no economic depression in the world to deal with,so on and so forth.There is nothing like a self-made man,Malcom maintains.
I particularly loved two chapters in this book.These two chapters - '10 000 Hours' and 'Marita's Bargain' - stress how paramount it is to work hard at your chosen profession.The message in these two chapters is gospel to live by.


* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 6

Due to the general reluctance from people as a whole to buy a mere t-shirt for R150, I decided to bring down the price to R100 a T.This was not an easy decision to make.Selling the FGM Ts for R100 makes our margin very low.And I did not take this 'forced' price reduction lying down.For example,I indicated that the Ts are made by the Barron company,which has a high reputation in the t-shirt manufacturing business.I also mentioned that our Ts are embroidered as opposed to being printed.Embroidered writing lasts longer compared to the printed one.All of this was to no avail.
With the people having spoken, I had to oblige.Also,admittedly it is better - at this stage - move the stock than to debate the merits of of the T price.

With a more agreeable price of R100,this week saw a slight movement on the Ts front.Another T was sold.

Money for Players in our PSL, Happy Birthdays, And 'On The FGM T's Sales Front - Part 5'.

* Our local football league - The Premier Soccer League - starting to pay its players some serious money.This was reported in an article by Carlos Amato(Sunday Times Sport,19/09/10).It is stated in this article that a PSL player can start off with as much as R40 000 per month.While the established stars in a big team can clear as much as R5 million a season.
This is not bad money for doing something that one loves.This kind of money for basically going out there to play a game or two per week,with practice sessions in between.This is the life.
For all parents with 4 to 5 year old boys,it would be wise to start channelling them towards a soccer career.By the time they start playing in the PSL you could be starting a life in the pound seats.
I am starting my own channeling with my 5 year old nephew -Tumelo.


* This past Sunday - 19th September - it being a birthday of 'yours truly'.One feels truly blessed to have seen another one of these special days everyone's life.

* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 5

It is easier,yes,to approach people and try and sell them something if all of this is happening in your own backyard.At the same time,though, most of these potential customers would have also known how your life was like before.They would have known you when you still had nice cushy job at a bank;when you still had a car,and when you still even had a house of your own.Inevitably they will ask me if I gave up all of that to go and sell t-shirts on the streets.Because this is basically what I am doing now.

But I think it may not be as simple as that.Some of the stuff that has happened to me I could not help ofcourse.Also,it is about having a certain vision of how one's life should be like;it is about persuing a dream.Along the way it has been rough I must admit.The hole in which one is in sometimes seems to have no bottom.One - at times -seems to be sinking deeper and deeper,to such an extent that it would be much easier to forget the whole thing and go back to a 9-5 job.

But,as they say,this is it.I put myself in this. I have to make it work.I would like to think that my current pain is part of getting there.At some stage we all get our breaks.

As if reading my thoughts above, the people of Protea North responded this week.They made it a good week for me.I sold two t-shirts this week,ladies and gentlemen.
Is was wonderful to see the number of 'Ts Sold This Week' on the FGM Ts Barometer finally change from 84 to 86.It had stayed stuck at 84 for what seemed like ages.

Could this be the start of a steady climb towards that magical 47 million target?

Serious Attempts by the Government to end the Public Servant's Strike, Pitso Mosimane's First Win, And 'On the FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 4'.

* Efforts from the government side to now quickly get to the bottom of the issues that have kept public servants(including teachers) away from work for almost three weeks.President Jacob Zuma weighed in himself this week.He instructed the relevant ministers to go back to the negotiating table.This after the talks between the government and the public servants had reached a stalemate over the two key issues of a salary increase offer by the government of 7% and a housing allowance of R800,while the unions demand 8.6% and R1000 respectively.
It is commendable that the government is trying to end this industrial dispute with some urgency.The strike has gone on for far too long.Its effects are there for all to see.Patients have died in some hospitals due to lack of care.While students - the matriculants in particular - have lost valuable study time.


* The new Bafana Bafana coach - Pitso Mosimane - getting a confidence boosting win in his first competitive game in charge.Bafana Bafana defeated Niger 2-0 on Wednesday in their 1st game of trying to qualify for the AFCON 2012 tournament.
This was actually Mosimane's second win as Bafana coach.But the game with Ghana's Black Stars,where they won 1-0, was a friendly.
There can't be a more satisfying feeling than starting one's job on a good and positive footing.Here is hoping for more of the same from ntate Mosimane le bashemane ba hae.


* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 4

After being on the road for the past three weeks and not making much headway as far as selling any Ts was concerned,this week I decided not to venture out.I decided to stick to my 'kasi' - Protea North - and do my prospecting here.

I suppose I had developed some form of fatigue from all the 'nos' from 'strangers'.It was a rejection phobia of sorts.For now I was going to focus only on people that I was familiar with.

In my 'kasi' I simply walked up and down the township,knowing that somehow I am bound to 'bump' into quite a number of people I knew.These I was going to try and press FGM Ts on.

And indeed I did meet a few familiar faces in my 'walk about'.I had to be careful though becuase some I didn't know that well.I didn't want to be seen to be now becoming friendly because I want them to buy something from me.
In one of my 'small talk before pitching' encounters I got definite lead.As I parted company with this particular gentleman I said,"So ntate,wena when are you taking your FGM t-shirt?".He replied,"Even now I can take it".Just like that.I nearly fell off my chair.In all my really serious prospecting of the past three weeks I had never managed to sell anything,now here I was - with a slightly more casual approach - about to make a sale in a while.It was a wonderful situation to be in.

Unfortunately I did not have his prefered colour(navy blue) and size(XL).I had run out of these.I duly noted this lead down and promised him to deliver the T in due course.But what a pleasure it was to know that I came this close to making a sale.

Coming Visits By Rock Band - '30 Seconds To Mars', Miss SA Placing in the Miss Universe Contest, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 3'.

* The news that super rock band '30 SECONDS TO MARS' is coming to South Africa.
They will be doing 2 shows, in Johannesburg and in Cape Town,in November.
We are big fans of the band here in The FGM and are thrilled that they are coming to these shores.Besides the melody in their songs,we love that choir-like chorus that is feature of most of their songs.This chorus sounds like a group of school children's choir.
We heard about the band's pending visit on 5FM.It was pleasing to note that the 5FM DJ's - as they made the announcement - were excited themselves about the band's coming.They must love the band as much as we do.


* The current Miss South Africa - Nicole Flint - being placed in the top 10 of the Miss Universe beauty contest that was held in Las Vegas,USA,recently.
This is no small feat,ladies and gentlemen.In effect this means our Nicole is one of the 10 most beautiful ladies in the world.
It would have been nice if she had gone on to win the title.But this would have resulted in South Africa being the object of viscious envy.I mean we have just had the FIFA World Cup.We could not possibly have the Miss World crown too.It would be unfair.We must give the other countries a chance.
For the record ,the title was won by Miss Mexico - Jimena Navarrete.Well done to her too.


* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 3

Next,I took my hawking of the FGM Ts to the nearby Protea Gardens mall.This mall area has the mall itself,another taxi rank and two filling stations(Shell and Caltex).It definitely had more people I could speak to.If selling is a numbers game, it follows then that the more people I speak to the higher are my chances of making a sale.And to make it even easier for people to buy I decided to drastically reduce the selling of the Ts.We normally sell them for R150 each.This time I made them R50 a T.This price - by the way - is lower that our cost price.I would be literally selling the Ts at a loss.

So there I was,going: "Excuse me,sawubona,my name is Thapelo.I have these nice T-shirts that I am selling.And they are only R50 each."A prospective buyer would then take the T from me for a closer look.As they are examining the T, I would be holding my breath,desperately hoping that this is going to be my first sale to a 'stranger' at my first attempt.But it was not to be.After having a look he would return it,saying he wanted to take it but did not any money now.And so it went on like this, from this person to that person.
There was something still missing in my package/presentation.Just that one small thing.

I was encouraged by the fact that the reduction in the price seems to have resulted in an improvement in my selling efforts.People may not be buying as yet,but they are taking a closer look at the Ts.They are wanting to feel quality of the make.
Having said that,I am not sure though if selling at this price of R50 is sustainable.Selling at less than the cost price is surely the quickest route to the poor house.

The 'Vuvuzela' Making South Africa Proud, Caster Semenya being Back, And 'On The FGM Ts Sales Front - Part 2'.

* It being official,ladies and gemtlemen.The word 'vuvuzela' is now part of the English language vocabulary.In this year's Oxford English Dictionary our 'vuvuzela' is included.
This trumpet-like horn gained fame during the recent FIFA World Cup that we hosted here in South Africa.
The reaction towards the 'vuvuzela' and its blaring sound can vary from adoration to distaste.Most soccer fans love the instrument.While some people loathe it.Whatever the reactions,the 'vuvu' has now made South Africa famous.
Wherever you - Mzansi citizens - go in the English speaking world,when they ask you where you are from,tell them you are from the land of the 'vuvuzela'.And if they don't know where that is,refer them to the Oxford English Dictionary.
"Halala Vuvuzela!"


* Our 800m lady world champion - Caster Semenya - back to doing what she does best.After being cleared by the IAAF earlier this year to race again,tonight she will be taking part in a 800m contest in Berlin.
We are genuinely happy for Ms Semenya.Her time away from athletics - while the IAAF investigates claims that she may not be completeley female - could not have been a pleasant experience.
In the end we can assume - now that she has been allowed back - sanity prevailed in the IAAF corridors.
"It's good to see you back Caster."


* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 2

This week I took my 'door to door' selling thing to our 'bo-mshayeli'(taxi drivers).I started next to the Tshiawelo flats here next to my 'kasi'.The taxis to town(Johannesburg) queue here after the morning 'rush hour is over.

The strategy to sell the FGM concept first,i.e. before presenting the Ts ,did not yield anything last week at the Protea Point complex.This time I decided not to say anything about what the FGM is.I approached the taxi drivers the way someone who sells socks,for example,would approach them.Bo-mshayeli would then have to buy based on whether they liked how the Ts looked or not.

Some drivers told me 'no,but thanks'.Others said I had come at the wrong time of the month.
Others still were very encouraging.They would tell me to try again next time and to never give up.This latter group - I must admit - gave me the energy to keep going;to try the next driver.

In the end though, I still didn't sell one FGM t-shirt.
So,did this mean that the FGM Ts do not even register on the 'looks' scale?

Next week is another day.Something has to give at some stage.

Scott 'Dilbert' Adams' Success, The Start of the Local Premier Soccer League Soccer Season, And 'On The FGM T's Sales Front - Part 1'.

* Learning - through the Jose Silva free online course - that Scott Adams,who is the creator of the popular 'Dilbert' cartoon strip,used affirmations to achieve his great succes as a cartoonist.The 'Dilbert' strip is one of the most syndicated strips.It is mostly about 'going ons' in an office-work enviroment.
To 'affirm' is to basically state - in a sentence form - your desire and then to repeat this sentence daily until your desire becomes a reality.You have to repeat your affirmation irrespective of what your reality is as you start to do it.
Adams first tried affirmations to get closer to a lady he fancied.When the technique worked in this instance he then applied it to pass a tough University entrance exam for his MBA studies.Here he incredibly got the exact mark - 94% - he was affirming.And ofcourse the reason why he is now rich and famous as a cartoonist is because he affirmed it also.
For us the revelation here was someone who used a motivational technique - affirmations - to achieve success 'outside' of the motivational field, so to speak.It is very rare to hear a motivational speaker saying they used one of their techniques to - for example - become the best tennis player in the world.Most of the time they use them do well in the same field of motivating people.Whereas Scott Adams used a motivational technique to achieve worldly success.
In the final analysis we can therefore conclude that motivational techniques - be they visualization,hypnosis,affirmations - can be used to achieve success in other areas.For example,I could start affirming : 'I am the President of South Africa'.And this will surely come to pass just as night follows day.


* Our local soccer season finally kicking off this past Saturday.Between now and the time Supersport FC won the league it feels like almost a decade had gone by.The sense of a big gap between the seasons ofcourse being the result of the FIFA World Cup.
The season curtain raiser - The Telkom Charity Cup - started things on Saturday.Kaizer Chiefs going on to win it on penalties against Orlando Pirates.
This re-starting of soccer here in Mzansi helping to alleviate some of the withdrawal symptoms for the true fans after the high of the World Cup.


* ON THE FGM Ts SALES FRONT - PART 1

Having exhausted all my leads - a list of freinds,ex-colleagues,family members,ex-girlfriends etc - I now faced the prospect of cold calling in an attempt to sell more Feel Good Movement t-shirts.
From the start I was aware that selling to strangers was going to be difficult.I mean this group of potential t-shirt buyers had no obligation to buy from me.They didn't know me from a bar of soap.

And so started my door to door selling.I started here in my 'kasi' - Protea North.I went to the shops at our complex - Protea Point.I started my sales presentations by explaining our mission in the Feel Good Movement.And this being to raise the positive energy levels in the country,and in the world,by writing and talking about the positive experiences around us.
After this quick backround I would then take out an FGM 'T' from my bag and say we are selling these to help spread the word about our message.
While people liked our idea of spreading the message of 'a focus on positive experiences',this did not seem to be enough to make them to part with their money to buy a 'T'.In my going around the 13 or so shops in the complex I did not sell even one FGM 'T'.
And we said we wanted to sell 47 million Ts?

But the 'struggle' must and will continue.This is a journey of a thousand miles.And we have taken our first step.

Having Faith,Danny Jordaan Moving Up in the World, And "So You Think You Can Dance?" Being Back.

* Being reminded about what it means to have faith.Local actress - Zukisa Matola ,who has appeared in the Generations soap,and many other TV productions - had a few words to say about faith.She was quoted in the MOVE magazine of 14th July 2010.She said:

".....Faith is when you set your mind on something and believe that
it will happen.The important part about faith is what you do while
waiting for your dreams to come true.You need to draw strength from
the Word of God until something happens in your life.I used to ignore
this scripture.I would believe in God for a short period and when things
didn't happen at the time I wanted them to,I would start doubting Him.
But I have learnt that you need to believe in God for things you haven't
seen yet."

This reminder on how to have faith being timely for us here in The FGM.Things - like our Feel Good
Workshops for example - are taking time to get off the ground.These are trying times.And during such times it is easy to lose faith in one's dream.It is easy to wonder if it will ever happen.But as Ms Matola above has indicated,one must continue to believe in one's dream despite the current hard times.The idea is to never,ever give up.


* The news that Danny Jordaan - the SA FIFA Local Organizing Committee CEO - has been appointed to FIFA's inspection team.This is a six man team that is highly influential .Their job is to assess the readiness of all the countries bidding to host the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.
After visiting the bidding countries this team will compile a report that FIFA will use in deciding on the hosts of these two World Cups.
We are just happy that Mr Jordaan has singled out for a seat in the inpecting team.This is - in a way - FIFA's acknowledgement that he did a splendid job in heading the team that successfully organised and hosted the recent FIFA Worl Cup here in South Africa.
We want to say 'nice one' to Mr Jordaan and here is hoping that even bigger things happen to you while you are there at FIFA.Maybe even the Presidency of the world body one day perhaps?Who can tell?


* One of the best reality progammes ever to be flighted by our public broacaster - the SABC - making a comeback.This past Saturday the dance reality show - "So You Think Yo Can Dance?" -
came back for its second season.It is on SABC 1 at 18.30 every Saturday.
We love this show because it is entertaining and inspiring.The different dance styles and the accompying music make for gripping television.But even better for all the dreamers out there,is to see all those hopefuls try their luck at winning the 1st prize.Needles to say, some of these dancers are not good enough to win this contest,but these guys are not lacking in self-belief.They still stood in those long lines to audition for a place in the show.And this - really - is the way to go in life.We must give our dreams the best shot,irrespective of what armchair critics are saying.

The Fantastic Way South Africa Hosted the FIFA World Cup, Spain's Win of the Same, And Madiba's Birthday.

* By all accounts South Africa doing a splendid job in hosting the FIFA World Cup.
Whether it is FIFA itself,or the many soccer fans who came to watch the games,everybody is raving about how well the tournament was organised.
The President of FIFA - Mr Sepp Blatter - gave us 9/10 for the hosting of the tournament.The soccer lovers who came to watch the games promised to come to these shores again to tour.
What can we say?
A special,special 'big up' to the LOC CEO - Danny Jordaan - and his whole team for making this World Cup such a success.A 'big up' too to our country's leaders - including our three Nobel laureates of Archbishop Tutu,Mr F W De Klerk and Mr Nelson Mandela - who brought us the World Cup by making the trip to Switzerland way back in 2004 to add weight to our bid.

Now for the other 'biggie' on the sporting front - the Olympic Games.We are ready.


* The Spanish team coming up trumps in the World Cup Final against The Netherlands last week Sunday.Spain defeated the Dutch by 1-0 in extra time.
For soccer purists this win by Spain was heartening.Spain play the game the beautiful way.Watching them move the ball from the backline,through the midfield,then on to the strikers who then make an attempt at goal, is delightful.It is like watching a chess game.An intriguing one at that,bacause the opponents will then put all of their men behind the ball to defend against this wave after wave of a Spanish attack.Like this, it then becomes just a matter of time before Spain scores and then goes on to win the game.This is exactly how it panned out against the Dutch in this Final.It was also the same story against Germany in the semi-finals, and against Portugal in the quarter-finals.
And ofcourse this Spanish way of playing - possession football with short passes - is modelled on the Barcelona FC style.Barcelona have turned this way of playing into an art form.

"Nice one Spain.Nice one."


* The fact that it is Nelson Mandela's birthday today.
Our former President is 92 years old today.It is not only his birthday today but it is also Mandela Day internationally.On this day each of us is urged to spend atleast 67 minutes of our day 'giving back' to our various communities in one way or another.
We wish to add our voice to the many birthday wishes and say:

"A Happy Birthday to you Madiba.May you not only live long,but live
long healthily.May your day - Mandela Day - galvanise the world and make
the giving of one's time to the community a worldwide phenomenon."

Feeling Good with FNB Knowledge Centre, Spain Going Through to the FIFA World Cup Final, And Germany Getting Something Atleast.

* Doing a Feel Good Workshop for FNB Knowledge Centre staff this past Thursday.
On their recent 2-day breakaway at the Ngwenya Country Escape,FNB Knowledge Centre invited The FGM to come and show them what we are about.We duly went and did our 'thing'.And frankly I have never had so much fun in one afternoon in a long time.
To Liz Malebane,Stefanie Bruwer,Terry Havenga,Schalk Walters and your team,many many thanks for the opportunity you gave us.One day when the Feel Good Revolution has taken over,we will duly name streets after you guys.


* The Spanish national soccer team making it through to the FIFA World Cup Final.
Spain defeated Germany 1-0 in the second Worl Cup semi-final on Wednesday.We are delighted that Spain - who are currently the best exponents of how we love the game of football to be played - made it.Spain now has a chance to make their beautiful,passing game count where it really matters: in the most important game of the tournament.And we have no doubt that they will prevail over the Nethertherlands in tonight's Final.The energy of all the neutral fans will be fully behind them because we simply love the way they play the game.

"Viva La Roja!Viva!"


* Germany getting something atleast out of this World Cup.They got bronze medals for their 3rd place finish.This was after they beat Uruguay 3-2 yesterday in a 3rd place play-off match.
We know that they would have loved to be playing in tonight's Final.
But we are still happy for Germany nevertheless.They lit up this tournament with their attacking and high scoring football.In their 4-1 defeat of Australia,their 4-1 trashing of England and their 4-0 demolition of Argentina,they made everybody sit up and take notice.Being one of the youngest squads in this tournament,this German team had this carefree attitude in their play.These guys were enjoying themselves.And for us spectators their fast,running soccer was a lovely sight.
We want to say to the coach - Joachim Loew - and his team -:

"Thank you for the thrills."

Bafana Bafana Peaking in Time And Special World Cup Courts

* Our national soccer team - Bafana Bafana - seeming to peak at the right time.
In their 1-0 win over Denmark yesterday they announced to Mzansi and the watching world that they are ready.They played excellently too.This win was timely in view of the fact that the World Cup is starting here in South Africa this coming Friday -11th June.
A win against European opposition and a fellow qualifier for the upcomimg FIFA World Cup can only be good for Bafana's self-confidance.
Thi win made it 12 games in a row without a loss for Bafana Bafana.Infact,Bafana have not lost a game since our coach Carlos Parreira came back from Brazil for a second spell as our national coach.
All in all Bafana are ready.And the country as a whole is ready too.
Let's do this thing.


* Our national government doing its best to make sure that World Cup is safe.
Special courts having been set up around the country to deal with crime arising out our hosting of the World Cup.These courts are to deal specufically with crimes committed against our visitors.They will also deal with crime committed by the very same tourists.
Having dedicated World Cup courts will help to speed up the prosecution of offenders during this period.It will also free up the normal courts for normal cases.
We say anything and everything must be done to make our visitors safe.
