The Year That Was - 2009

The following 'feel good moments' that absolutely made our 2009. These are the happenings that make us say that this was a great year. Because of these, it was a joy to have been alive in 2009.

ON THE WORLD STAGE
___________________

1. The Barcelona Football Club winning the European Champions League Final.
In this game against Manchester the men from the city of Barcelona dazzled. The 2-0 score margin does not even begin to explain the artistry in this victory. Barcelona restored our faith in the beauty of the beautiful game.

2. U S President Barack Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Here is a man - who has already done much to convince us that dreams do come true - being rightly rewarded by the Nobel Prize Committee for his promising start in helping the world get rid of nuclear weapons.

IN SOUTH AFRICA
________________

1. Our peaceful national elections earlier this year.
The acrimony at the ANC's leadership conference in December of 2008 thankfully
not spilling over into the 2009 elections. These are the elections that helped to entrench our democracy. After their successful conclusion we can happily call ourselves a mature democracy.

2. FIFA's 2010 World Cup Draw in Cape Town on December 4th.
The LOC put on an impressive show of efficiency and Mzansi's technical know-how in this event.
We can only say: " Woza June 11 2010! Woza! S A is ready."

ON A PERSONAL NOTE
____________________

1.The arrival of first stock The Feel Good Movement t-shirts in August.
That Friday 28th, I will never ever forget. On this day one of my most cherished dreams came true. On the scale of 'big-ness' the FGM's t's arrival was on the
same level as the launch of this FGM website. And, believe it or not, this launch was also on the 28th day of the month(November 2008).

2. Doing my first public motivational speaking gig.
This talk took place at the Department of Education( JHB South) Principals thanksgiving function at the Mid Ennerdale Primary School.
This was an awesome experience for 'yours truly'. To get up and look at a packed hall and know that one has to deliver was was stomach-churning.
But I kept my nerve and got on with it. And I think I did well.

With those, here is hoping that there will be more and many
'feel good moments' for you and for me in 2010.
Let's start the 2nd decade of the millennium on an awesome note.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR A GREAT 2009.

Smoothly Run FIFA World Cup Draw, 'Football Fridays' Gaining Popularity, And Thanksgiving Functions at the Mid-Ennerdale Primary School

* The draw for next year's FIFA's World Cup that going well technically. This draw to group the 32 nations that have qualified for the soccer showpiece next year took place at Cape Town's ICC this past Friday. In terms of glitches to the proceedings, there were none.
We are happy that the first real test - in terms of South Africa's organizational ability and technical 'know how' - went smoothly.
As for Bafana Bafana's group, we can only wish them well. It is a tough group.
With two former world champions in Uruguay and France, and one of the best teams in the Americas - Mexico - in our group, it the proverbial 'group of death' for us. As hosts we are expected to make it to the 2nd round at least, like all host countries before us.
And we will make it, come rain or shine.

* The realization that the 'Football Fridays' tradition is slowly, but surely, taking root in corporate SA. I heard a DJ on the local radio station -94.7- saying how much he appreciates the fact that his employer - Primemedia - has bought all its employees Bafana Bafana t-shirts to wear on Fridays in support of 'Football Fridays'.
'Football Friday' is the tradition of wearing Bafana Bafana jerseys on Fridays. This is done, firstly, to support our national soccer team - Bafana Bafana - as they prepare to take part in next year's FIFA World Cup. Secondly, it is done to support the efforts of FIFA's Local Organizing Committee, and those of the country as a whole, in putting together the best World Cup ever.
And after Friday's tough draw for our national team, 'Football Fridays' have now become even more imperative to Mzansi people.

* A year- end 'thanksgiving' function that I attended at the the Mid Ennerdale Primary. This was a gathering of school principals of the Department of Education Johannesburg South region.
This function - which was also an awards ceremony - turned out to be one of the best functions that I have ever attended .It was a well organised 'do'. And its theme of 'thanksgiving' at this time of the year was spot on.
I was also humbled by the reception I received there as one of the speakers. This started with bo-Ausi Lola at department's Lenasia offices.
'Big up' also to the following:

a) Mrs Rosa Malherbe - the JHb South Director - whose idea this function was.

b) Mrs Misaveni Maluleke - for MCing this event to perfection.

d) The Mid Ennerdale pupil's musical entertainment. Their rendition of the Christmas carol "Oh Holy Night" was out of this world.

e) Ms Mili Viljoen for a 'vote of thanks' to end all 'votes of thanks'.

'Big up' to bo-Mr Abrahams and Bra Maurice as well. And a special thanks must go to the Mid Ennerdale Primary School principal - Mr Biccar - for hosting us.

Much love to you JHB South.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

We Will Show Them
________________

A tough group, they said.
A group of death, they added.
But we are not afraid.
Show them, we will.
Go Bafana Bafana.
Show them.
Show them who is king.
Show them who is king of the African jungle.
We will show them.
Show them we are the kings of this jungle.
Can you hear the roar Mexico?
You will after June 11.
Can you hear the roar Brazil?
You will after July 11.
We will have showed you.

'No To Violence' Drive, The End of the Recession, And Happy Birthdays

* The start of a campaign called '16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children' here in South Africa this past Wednesday( 25th November). The 16 days will end on 10th December.
In this period all South Africans are urged to actively do something to protest against all forms violence on women and children. This campaign is also an international one that is backed by the UN.
A campaign against violence of any sort is worthy. But one meant to protect the most vulnerable members of our society is priceless.
We would like to hereby put it on record that here in the FGM  we fully support these efforts to protect our women and our children.
As they often say, this campaign should really be a year-long one.
Let us all wear our white ribbons during the 16 days.

* The announcement by Statistics SA that South Africa is now officially out of the recession. We have experienced a small growth - of about 0.9% - in our GDP in the 3rd quarter of this year, according to Stats SA. This growth in our economy - as opposed to a contraction - in about a year ( or so) is the clearest sign that we are moving out of the doldrums. From now on things should start improving financially for the man in the street. It may not happen overnight, but the change has begun. And this is something to celebrate.
This time next year things should be even better. The FIFA 2010 World Cup will have come and gone. The economic benefits of having hosted it will be everywhere.

* This weekend this website - The Feel Good Movement - turned 1. We have been
in existence for one whole year now.
Without harping on this point too much, may we be allowed a moment of self-indulgence. We wish ourselves a HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

World Champions from The Philipines, Steady Interest Rates, The Start of Free Internet Access Days

* Manny Pacquiao making boxing history this past weekend. He defeated Miguel
Cotto in a WBO welterweight championship fight by TKO in the 12th round. With this victory Manny won his 7th title in a 7th different weight division. And he is the first man in boxing history to achieve this feat.
By all accounts, Pacquiao is a damn fine boxer. The bible of boxing - RING magazine - rates him as the best pound- for- pound boxer in the world.
I just love the fact that here is a man from slums of the Philipines - his home country - who has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams.
He has brought back interest in boxing around the world. Here in Mzansi Manny's runaway success brings back memories of the times of bo-Baby Jake Matlala. In those days the nation would eagerly await Baby Jake's next fight and we would know for sure that it was going to be yet another demolition job.
On behalf of all the 3rd world citizens we would like to say:

" Nice one Manny. Through your talent, dedication and hard work
you are proving each day that dreams do come true, my brother."

* The new Reserve Bank governor - Gill Marcus - keeping the interest rate the
same at 7%. She was quoted as saying the economic conditions did not warrant a change either way( i. e. up or down).
In these recessionary times, and also closer to the festive season of heavy spending, having the cost of borrowing money stay the same must be welcomed. In her decision to maintain the status quo on the interest rates front the governor must have considered all these above factors.
Ms Marcus has started her tenure as governor on a good footing, we say.

* Hearing - on our local television station(etv) - the good news that a town called Swindon in the UK is to provide all its residents with free internet access.
The local council there announced that is it partnering with a private company to roll out this project to its 186 ooo residents.
The residents will get the basics for free. For example , they will surf the net and download their emails. Anything heavier - like downloading video content and music will still cost them something.
This free internet access - even if it is limited for now - is something that we here in South Africa could do with. The cost of internet access is very high here by anyone's measure.
So we say 'big up' to the Swindon municipality for starting a free internet access revolution. This - we hope - will catch on around the world.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Of 3rd World Heroes
_________________

Of Manny.
Manny Pacuiao.
Lightning speed.
It rains punches in the ring.
Of the Pac-Man.
The destroyer of our Lehlohonolo.
The demolisher of bo-Barreira, Oscar.
Of late, the conqueror of Ricky and Miguel.
Of the People's Champion.
A generous spirit,we are told.
Giving freely to his Filipino nation.
Materially and otherwise.
Of ambition too.
The future President of the Philipines?
That would be nice.
We will watch this space.
Of Manny.
Manny Pacquiao.
A 3rd world hero.

Mr Zulu Decamping For Mtubatuba, The Mandela Day going International, And 50th Post Messages of Congratulations

* Gaddafi Zulu - a co-worker and a friend - deciding to follow his heart and
go back to his home town - Mtubatuba - in the Kwazulu-Natal province. He got a transfer to an FNB branch there. We would like to say to him:

"You tell us that you need to sort out some stuff that side, mfana.
But this I don't believe. The hustle and bustle life of a big city like Johannesburg must have proved too much. The city of gold is not for sissies, mfana.
We are happy for you nevertheless. You got what your heart desired, my man.
Our lively debates and discussions about everything under the sun will be sorely missed Mr Zulu.
Go well."

* The United Nations following the lead from our national government by declaring July 18th the Nelson Mandela Day internationally.
Earlier this year our government had declared this day July 18th  - which is the birthday of Nelson Mandela- a Mandela Day nationally.
On this day we are all urged to give 67 minutes of our time to needy causes.
The UN General Assembly said that with this gesture it was honouring Nelson Mandela for his contribution to world peace. In particular, the Assembly sighted
Mandela's conciliatory stance when he came out of jail.
As South Africans we are extremely proud of this latest accolade for our 'Tata'.
His vision for all of us to change the world in our own small ways, lives on.

* Messages of support that we continue to get here in The FGM for
reaching our 50th post last week.
Here is a few of them:

JM smsd to say: "Waa!! Well done."

Ms T emailed, saying:" I read the post( 50th) on the blog...
very impressive to see that you
have reached this far."

Mils wrote : " I have read your poem( '50 Ways') of last week.
Congratulations.
God gave us a life worth living. When we trust
him we can never go wrong."

Much appreciated guys.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

Mr Zulu Is Going Home.
___________________

Gaddafi Zulu is going home.
He is going home to Mtubatuba.
He is going back to where it all started.
Mr Zulu is catching the train.
The midnight train to Mtubatuba.
Egoli was a mountain too high.
I will tell the beautiful Miss Mtshali.
I will tell her that Mr Zulu has gone home.
Tell her to follow him.
And like Gladys Knight, I know she will.
Mr Zulu is going home, ladies and gentlemen.
There goes a fellow reader.
There goes a fellow thinker.
'Gaddafs' is going home to his family.
We are poorer for it.
But life must and will go on.
Sisonke Mr Zulu.

A Half-Century of Posts, Bigger and Better Malls in JHB South, And An Uplifting Song by NICKLEBACK

* This week's FGM post being the 50th that I have put out.
The realization that we have put out a half-century of blog posts feels wonderful.
The very 1st post was done in November 2008 and was entitled "Of chocolate gifts, Bafana Bafana, and Bo-makhelwane."
This post was well received by the first few readers. And here at work - without letting me know- somebody printed out this post and put it up on our notice board.
This public display had created such a buzz in the office.
To this day I still do not know who put up that post on our board.
Whoever you are and wherever you are, my dear colleague, many thanks.
I am still standing today because of those first few words of praise from my colleagues after they read that 1st post.

* The recent revamping of 'our' mall -The Glen Shopping Centre - in the south of
Johannesburg. This is the place where 'yours truly' and many other Joburg south citizens spend our working lives. The mall is now much bigger with more stores and parking bays.
Besides the many new stores like 'Incredible Connection', 'Hi-Fi Corporation' and
'Game' - there seems to be lifts everywhere one goes. The GLEN mall has suddenly become like one of those swanky malls north of Johannesburg. A colleague even joked that there is a real danger of us - old inhabitants - getting lost in these new surroundings.
But this is all good. This expansion is a sign of growth in this part of Jozi.
We have just gone upmarket here in the south, ladies and gentlemen.

* Some inspiration from the latest song by NICKLEBACK - the Canadian rock band. Nickleback are the original gravel-voiced rock band.
I am loving the lyrics of their latest song called "If Today Was Your Last Day".
These are lyrics to live by. Here are some excerpts from the song:

"If today was your last day.
................................................
Would you call those friends you never see?
Reminisce old memories?
Would you forgive your enemies?
And would you find that one you're dreaming of?
Swear up and down to God above,
That you'd finally fall in love if today was your last day.

If today was your last day.
................................................
Would you make your mark by mending a broken heart?
You know it's never too late to shoot for the stars.
Regardless of who you are.

So do whatever it takes.
'Cause you can't rewind a moment in this life.
Let nothing stand in your way.
'Cause the hands of time are never on your side."

The melody in this song is also very good.

So, if what would you do if today was our last day?

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS".

Dousing of Flames by Julius Malema, Varying Reactions to Our 'Kuduzela' Prize, Trevor Manuel's Apology

* The ANC Youth League's President - Julius Malema - coming out in support of the Free State University rector -Professor Jansen - over the latter's pardoning of the Reitz 'four'.
The Youth League met with Professor Jansen on Thursday. After this meeting, Julius Malema said that they - as the ANC Youth League - were fully behind Professor Jansen in his efforts to transform the university.
Malema's support for Jansen is greatly welcomed by some of us who had cheered the Professor's pardoning act. We are relieved that another public figure - in addition to Archbishop Tutu - has declared his support for Jansen.
In the days following his pardoning gesture Professor Jansen had been a subject of unprecedented criticism by some sections of the nation. Not only did they call for his removal from office, but some went as far as to say he must be 'removed from society' i.e.killed.
Now, the 'President' has spoken.
Can we now please all get back to the task of building this nation of ours.

* The many different responses from our customers when they receive their
KUDUZELAS.
A Kuduzela is a form of a Vuvuzela, which is a trumpet-like instrument that is blown in celebration at our local soccer games. A Kuduzela is made of a Kudu horn instead of synthetic material that is used to make a Vuvuzela.
FNB customers stand a chance of winning a Kuduzela when they purchase cell phone airtime through the cell phone banking service.
On receiving a 'KUDU' some customers are taken back by its appearance. It is about the size of an outstretched arm, black in colour and thick in width.
Some tell us outright how happy they are to have won. They have hardly won anything in their lives, they tell us. Others want us to show them how to blow it i.e how to make it produce a sound. And this we cannot do of course. Getting a sound out of a 'KUDU' is an acquired skill, just like blowing a trumpet.
Those that I love are those customers who may be witnessing this handing over of a 'KUDU'. They suddenly want it too, despite them not using the cellphone banking service. They tell us that they are prepared to buy it if they have to. But you can't buy a 'KUDU'. You can only win it.

From this clamour for Kuduzelas it looks like Mzansi people are going to be blowing up a storm during next year's FIFA World Cup.

* The minister of national planning - Trevor Manuel - admitting that the expensive ministerial car - a BMW limo - that cost around R1,2 million was a mistake. He said that in retrospect he should maybe have bought a less expensive car - notwithstanding the fact that as a minister his car allowance allowed for this purchase. He apologised to the nation for not leading by example, especially in these financially trying times.
To hear Mr Manuel make this public admission felt good. If there is any belt-tightening that has to be done by the nation it has to start at the top with our leaders in government.
Just like when he was minister of finance, Mr Manuel continues to inspire South Africans to be good citizens.

"Awe Trevor."

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

On Second Thoughts
_________________

On a 2nd take,
Maybe you were right Prof.
Maybe you were right all along.
On second thoughts,
Maybe forgiving someone is not such a bad thing.
Maybe we are better humans.
Far more than we credit ourselves.
On 2nd thinking,
Maybe you have seen the future Prof.
A future of racial harmony.
A future of a united Mzansi.
On second thoughts,
Stay where you are Prof.
That seat belongs to you.
The Gods have willed it.
Even the 'President' concurs.

South Africa Ready for FIFA's 2010 World Cup, And 3rd FGM Blog Followers

* Things slowly and nicely shaping up for our hosting of the FIFA's World Cup next year.
All the hosting stadiums are ready. We are told-by the LOC - that the newly built
ones are left with a few minor touches here and there.
And on the football front, we are glad that Mr Carlos Parreira is back to steady things on the Bafana Bafana ship.
Internationally, it is starting to look like we may just get to have all the currently hot players gracing our shores. Argentina's Lionel Messi - the Barcelona F C maestro - will be here. Argentina just managed to qualify.
Ronaldo and his Portugal, and Thierry Henry and the French team, are all still on track to come. These two stars just need to first help their respective countries to do well at the play-offs after both Portugal and France failed to qualify directly.
We will put them in our prayers.

Otherwise Mzansi cannot wait, ladies and gentlemen.

* Thulebona Mhlanga becoming the 3rd official FGM website follower. She is the silhouette figure next to Zak and 'Mathuso.
Thulebona is a student at the University of Johannesburg. And, she is also the first member of our FGM Volunteers charity project.

"We are happy to have you on board sisi. With your support the
FGM community can only grow from strength to strength."

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

We Are Ready
____________

Mzansi is ready.
Africa is ready.
We are ready to host the world.
Let FIFA's party start.
Let its extravaganza begin.
We are ready to do it justice.
Let Bo-Messi.
Let Bo-Ronaldo and Thierry.
Let them come.
Africa is ready to show its hospitality.
Let the hoards of football-loving 'peeps' descend.
Let them descend on us.

Professor Jonathan Jansen's Move, Ghana Under-20 Soccer Team's World Cup Triumph, And Horoscope Sign 'Write Ups' for Eternity

* The decision by the new Free State University Rector - Professor Jonathan Jansen - to pardon the Reitz 'four'. These 'four' are the 4 white former students( residents of the Reitz hostel) of the University who were caught on camera taunting and degrading black blue collar employees of the University. These acts by these students were deemed racist in nature and the students were subsequently expelled.
The rector said that not only will the the students be allowed back to finish their studies, but the University will no longer pursue the court case against them.
This act of forgiveness by the Rector must be applauded. It was a bold decision which was taken at a risk of a backlash.
It must be seen in a broader context of nation building.

"Nice one, Prof."

* Ghana's Under 20 soccer team doing Africa proud by winning the FIFA Under 20 World Cup on Friday night in Egypt. They defeated Brazil 4-3 on penalties.
This was the first time an African country had won this tournament and it calls for a popping of champagne.
The 'Black Satellites' - as this Ghanaian Under 20 team is known -' represented' big time. They played the last hour of the final game minus one player - Daniel Addo - who was sent off for a dangerous tackle.
And they achieved this victory against the mighty Brazilians.
Could this win of a big FIFA tournament by an African team be a taste of things to come when the biggest FIFA tournament comes to Mzansi next year? Could next year indeed be Africa's time?
The possibilty of this African dream coming true is thrilling.

* An astrological star sign 'write up' of all time. It was written by Jonathan Cainer - the resident astrologer of THE TIMES newspaper. In this 'write up' Mr Cainer captured the essence of what we are about here in the FEEL GOOD MOVEMENT.
For the VIRGO sign this past Friday, he wrote:

"There is always a reason to reject an idea or to find fault with a plan.
There is something about a situation that you can critisize if you choose.
People are never faultless or flawless, so it does not take much to see
aspects of their character that have much room for improvement.
Tolerance requires patience. It needs faith. Faith demands
intelligence. For only the cleverest amongst us can see the true value of
trust and optimism. Lead the way to a better world this weekend. Look
on the bright side."

After reading that, I was speechless. I was totally and completely blown away.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

For the opportunity to be a bigger person.
Just for that chance.
I would give up my right to be renumerated.
I would work for free.
For the chance to make another feel good.
For the chance to say: let by-gones be by-gones.
For the chance to make a contribution.
A contribution towards a better South Africa.
Just for that chance.
I would pay the ultimate price.

Nobel Prize Committee's Surprise Choice, Puff Johnson in SA, And 'Umhlangano' with a Difference

* The announcement that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 has been won by US President - Barack Obama. The Nobel Prize committee said it gave the prize to Obama for his efforts in working towards a future peaceful world. In particular, they sighted his work in taking steps to creating a world free of nuclear weapons.
While a few jaws may have dropped at this selection, we welcomed it. Mr Obama has started his presidency on a good and positive note. He may not have achieved his goals as yet, but as the Nobel committee itself stated, he has not only given America hope for a better country, but he has given the world hope, too, for better international relations where problems are solved through dialogue.
And, by winning this huge and influential prize so soon after his history-making victory at the recent US Presidential elections, it is starting to look like this man - Obama - is a child of destiny.

* The news that US 'r & b' singer - Puff Johnson - is planning to release the first single from her upcoming new album from right here in Mzansi.
Ms Johnson has been staying in our country since October last year. She has made SA her second home, we are told. In her own words, "South Africa a beautiful country with beautiful people."

"We are truly honoured Ms Johnson. We love your music too.
Who can forget that ground breaking album of yours-MIRACLE.
In here I particularly loved these two awesome cuts - 'Outside my window' and
'All over your face'.
You can stay here forever my sister, we won't mind."

* An Umhlangano( staff meeting) with a difference here at work this past Wednesday.
On Wednesdays we normally hold full staff meetings between 8 and 9 am. On this particular Wednesday(07/10/09) we were supposed to hold a special type of meeting called Umhlangano. An Umhlangano is held once a month and is basically a platform for voicing grievances by staff . And needless to say, these meetings can be tense and fractious affairs.
But on this Wednesday we decided to throw the rule book out of the window. We
decided to make ourselves feel good instead.
We started off by letting lose on the dance 'floor'. Music - at high volume - was put on, on the branches' hi-fi system. And we all got down and did our thing. Brenda Fassie's old hit - 'Weekend Special' - has never sounded so good.
After this highly invigorating dancing session, our manager read us this awesomely inspiring piece of writing about two ill men painting beautiful pictures in their minds as they lay in their beds in a hospital room.
This meeting was was ended by hugs all around.
We left the meeting highly energised and motivated. We were ready to 'wow' our customers.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

FGM Volunteers Project, New Street Lights in my 'Kasi', 2ND FGM Blog Followers

* In the spirit of last week's post entry about the 29-Day-Giving Challenge, we have decided to do our own bit of giving here in the Feel Good Movement. We have started a charity organization called The FGM Volunteers. And R10 of every FGM t-shirt sold will go to this organization.
Through this entity we hope to give back, so to speak. We will give of our time and a bit of money to good and worthy causes.
The reward for our volunteers, we hope, will be the satisfaction in contributing towards making this world a better place. More importantly though, we would like to do this contribution in a fun way. We would like to add a 'feel good' factor to our charitable acts.
In starting this project I have personally been inspired by a few individuals:

a) Mrs Linda Dickson - my supervisor here at work.

b) Ausi Jabu Mabaso - of Mbotane Business Solutions.

c) Mr Nelson Mandela and his Nelson Mandela Foundation - with their
creation of the Mandela Day( 18th July).

* A recent pleasing development in my 'kasi' of Protea North.
I have noted that our streets at night are suddenly brighter. This light fantastic is a result of the faulty street lights being fixed. Where at first there would light in patches because some street lights were working while others were out of order, these days the light is evenly balanced. The street lights are all now working. In the evenings are streets are like broad daylight. And I must say it feels safer to walk in these brightly lit streets.
I would like to say well done to the people responsible. People like our councilor - Ms Jabu Khanyi - and the Joburg City Metro municipality.

* The Feel Good Movement website getting its 2nd official follower. This time it is a lady called 'Mathuso Kao. And, yes, you will find her at the top right hand corner of this page, next to Zak.
All I want to say to her is this:

"We warmly welcome you my sister. We are truly humbled.
We promise to keep doing what we are doing and do it well."

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

To Give.....
___________

To give is...
To say I am human.
It's to say anothers' suffering is my suffering.
It is to go beyond the self.
To say the whole is more important.
When we give.....
We feel better.
We feel good.
There is no better reward.
By giving.....
We become the best of the human species.
We become a Mother Theresa.
A Nelson Mandela.
A Mahatma Gandhi.
To give is to be great.

A Break from Taxi Operators, '29 Day Giving Challenge', And Heritage Day Celebrations

* The relative peace and quiet in the taxi industry, notwithstanding the fact that
the BRT transport system is now almost a month in existence.
At the launch of this bus system we had feared for the worst. There were rumours flying of a week-long strike by the taxi operators etc, etc.
In the end this strike never happened. We were spared the disruption and inconvenience.
And credit must go to the taxi operators themselves. They allowed sanity to prevail.
Big 'ups' to our taxi guys.

* Getting to hear about something called THE 29 DAY GIVING CHALLENGE. I read about this challenge in a link I received from Ms Jeanette Maw(www.goodvibecoach.com). Jeanette is a Law of Attraction teacher.
This challenge is about encouraging people to get into the habit of giving. Each participant is urged to give at least one gift per day for 29 consecutive days. And these gifts do not have to be all material things. One can give a friend words of encouragement, for example. Or you can give your time to a charity.
It is hoped that after 29 days one will have fully experienced the joys and rewards of 'giving' and therefore continue with the practice beyond the 29 days.
From a personal experience, I can vouch for the benefits of giving. On some days I would be left short from giving; even be tempted to stop the practice. But I never stopped.
When I look back now at how fortunate I have been in my life in some instances, I cannot help but feel that the Universe blessed me in return.
For more information on the 29 Day Giving Challenge you can visit www.29gifts.org

* A Heritage Celebration at work that was full of pomp, colour and culture.
24th September is a holiday known as Heritage Day here in South Africa. On this day all Mzansi citizens are urged to celebrate their different cultures.
At my workplace we decided to celebrate this day the next working day - Friday 25th September. We all came to work dressed in our traditional attire.
Some of my colleagues looked awesome. To the following few I doff my hat:

a) "Bessie Mnisi - in your Zulu gear - you were pretty and colourful my sister. You looked like a Zulu princess. Which you are."

b) "Sibusiso Cindi - in your Sesotho hat( mokorotlo) and Sesotho blanket - you 'represented' my brother. You reminded me of my 2nd home-Lesotho."

c) "Mahommed Jacobs - in your Islamic all white - you were like the Imam
himself. You looked holy and ready to fly off to heaven there and then."

And to all those that made an effort to dress up but I did not mention,  you guys also looked great.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

An Industry We Need
_________________

It's an industry we need.
An industry we want.
It's our industry.
The taxi industry.
It's a cog in our economy.
It ferries the workforce to and fro.
It's a livelyhood for thousands.
It's an industry we need.
An industry we can't do without.
The 'Zola Budds'.
The 'scufftins'.
The 'Nyathis'.
We need them all.
It's an industry we have come to love.
An industry with colourful players.
Without bo-mshayeli.
Bo-queue marshall.
Bo-mnikazi.
This is an industry of industries.
Our taxi industry.

Presidential Hotlines, 'Off Work' Afternoon, 9 Months of The FGM Blog

* The opening of the much anticipated Presidential Hotline call centre this past Tuesday( 15/09/09).
This is where Mzansi citizens will be able to air their grievances on a myriad of issues directly to President Jacob Zuma. Or at the least the people manning this call centre will pass these complaints to him and he will in turn act on them.
And apparently on its first day of operating the President was there himself taking a few calls.
I think this facility is a nice touch from the President's office. This direct access to government will help to solve a lot of problems on the ground where the people live. It will also help by-pass bureaucracy.
Let us all put this facility to good use, Mzansi people.

* Having an afternoon off at work on Friday. This was part of my birthday celebrations and it came courtesy of our branch manager - Laurinda Hendricks.
It is a tradition here at our branch - FNB The Glen - for a staff member to have an afternoon off on their birthday.
This bit of time on my hands gave me a chance to do this and that.
I must thank branch management for this 'afternoon-off-on-your-birthday' idea because this 'time off' does certainly give a sense of being pampered as it is befitting a birthday boy/girl.

* The Feel Good Movement website having been in existence now for just over 9 months.
Some of the highlights since the last celebration - at 3 months way back in February - being:

1) The FGM blog 1st page being made a landing page in one of my 'kasi' ( Protea North) internet cafes. This means that when a person signs on in any computer in this internet cafe they would first land on our web page before going to the website that they want to visit. Much like the way the Google search engine page is a landing page in most internet cafes.
And this huge exposure was given to us free of charge by Mandla - the manager at this particular internet cafe.
" Thanks Mandla 'my man' "

2) Getting our first official FGM website follower. His name is Zak. You can see him on the top right hand corner of this page.

"Welcome to the FGM, Zak 'my man' "

And we also know, for a fact, that there hundreds of thousands of our followers out there. You are just waiting for the right opportunity and the right time to 'come out'.

3) Finally, the arrival of the FGM t-shirts about 3 weeks ago. And the subsequent wearing of them en masse by some of my colleagues at work on that Casual Day Friday.

The FEEL GOOD Revolution has arrived indeed, ladies and gentlemen.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

Now There Is A Line
________________

It's a line to the President.
And it's hot.
What's on you mind Mzansi people?
Service delivery issues?
Now there is a line.
A line to power.
Bo-makhi disturbing the peace?
Now you have a line.
A line to Msholozi.
All the hot issues.
All the burning issues.
Now they have a line.
It's a line on fire.
It's a line to a better life,  for all.

Caster Wa Rona, The Movie - 'Distrct 9', And Township Slang Phrases

* The continuing outpouring of support from Mzansi citizens for our golden girl - Caster Semenya. Caster is the South African lady sprinter who won gold in the 800m event in the recent World Athletic Championships in Berlin.
The support is in the wake of the leaked gender tests results done on her by the IAAF that say she is intersexed ( i.e.she is neither purely female nor purely male).
We would also like to voice our support  for Caster. She has not done anything wrong.
Her biological make-up is what she was saddled with at birth. She cannot change it.
I would like to say to Caster:

" Be strong my sister. This too shall pass."

* The locally made movie - DISTRICT 9 - that is doing very well in our local movie theatres. It was reported in THE TIMES ( 08/09/09) newspaper this past week that DISTRICT 9 is hogging the NO 1 spot in 'money made' terms for the 2nd week running.
It apparently did exceptionally well also in the US when it was first released there.
This film was made here in Mzansi, in the Soweto township.
It may not be strictly an SA story in that is it science fiction. We do not have a history of this genre in our film making. But we are still incredibly proud of its
achievement, both here and abroad.
Well done to bo-Neill Blomkamp - the director, and bo-Kenneth Nkosi - one of the actors in it.

* Learning a new township slang phrase for the act of selling stuff from person to person. When you do this i.e sell 'smallanyana' items like t-shirts, CDs, DVDs etc to individuals it is said:"O pusha doollas".
I got to learn this from a Spur( The Glen) gentleman employee. I had asked him where a colleague of his was. I was carrying a gym bag as I asked him this. He replied by asking me if I am "pushing doollas." If I was, he was also interested.
He never got to explain to me how this phrase originated. But I suspect 'doollas' comes from 'dollars'. When one is selling stuff, one is trying to make 'dollars', so to to speak.
After this lesson I felt even more 'ghetto' and happening.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

Cast In Stone
___________

Cast in stone Caster, you are.
Your being, Semenya.
Like your South African-ness.
Is cast in stone.
Your golden performances.
Like our love for you.
Is cast in stone.
The Australian media.
Or even the IAAF.
They can never change these.
These and other facts about you.
They are all cast in stone.
You are still a champ.
You are still pure gold.
And this, is cast in stone too.

Successful BRT Launch,Rubza Finding His Wings,FGM T-Shirt Day

* The launch of the Bus Rapid Transport system this past Monday(31/8/9) going well.It was the first commercial run of these new buses. They carried passengers from near Thokoza Park in Rockville and meandered through Soweto, the Johannesburg CBD,until their final stop around the Ellis Park stadium area.
The threatened disruption of this launch by the taxi operators did not materialize as everyone had feared.
And from accounts of a few people who have tried these buses, they are a comfortable and cost-effective way of getting to work or to school.
Personally,I do not think that our taxi operators have anything to fear from the BRT.These buses travel on a fixed route and on fixed time schedules. They meet certain transport needs. They can never cover the needs of all the commuters. There is still nothing to beat the flexibility of a 'Zola Budd' taxi.

* A friend of The FGM-Ruben('Rubza')-having taken the bold step of setting up his own shop. After working in his friend's shop-'Ha Robert'-for some time,Ruben has decided to put up his own operation in the Protea Glen location. It is a little joint called 'SELLO's GENERAL DEALER',next to the BP garage in Glen.
If you do happen to be in the Protea Glen area and are looking for a tasty
'Kota'-the township bunnychow-do pay Sello's General Dealer a visit.
I am really happy for 'my man' Rubza. His long cherished dream has come true at last.

* A few of my colleagues who bought The FGM t-shirts deciding to make Friday's Casual Day an FGM t-shirt day. They came to work clad in their brand new FGM t-shirts.I would like to take this opportunity to say 'ta' to these guys:

To Sarah Bibi Imam-Shaik- a long time supporter of The FGM.

" You looked awesome in your all black attire my sister. And with your 'bhurka' on,you looked like those young and committed Muslim ladies ready to die
for the cause.
Much respect to you Mrs Imam-Shaik."

To Boniswa - the new kid on the block and PA of PA's.

"Loved how you only got you only got your t-shirt on Friday
and never wasted any time. You wore it there and then to show your support.
Ndiya bulela sisi."

To Victor Mahlangu - the ringleader of this group.

"For conceiving the idea of an FGM t-shirt Casual Day and
then marshalling our colleagues to come on board.
Big ups 'my man'."

To Sibusiso Cindi - our smart guy.

"If Victor-above-was the Fidel Castro of this plan, you were
the Che Guevara of it.You won over the hearts of the people with
your charm.
Kea leboha ntate."

Thank you guys, from the bottom of my heart.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE.THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Government's Firm Hand, Pep Guardiola's Pep Talk, And the Arrival of The FGM T-shirts

* Our government showing who is in charge in response to the SANDF soldier's recent strike.
The striking soldiers had tried to storm the Union Buildings - President Jacob Zuma's residence in Pretoria - in a protest over their 'low' salaries. But they were repelled by the police with teargas. This firm response by the government was reassuring. Any form of lawlessness has to be nipped in the bud. The soldiers can go on strike if they want to, but the burning of cars etc..was uncalled for.
This same strong show of force was promised by the Premier of Gauteng - Nomvula Mokonyane -  to the taxi owners who were planning to disrupt the launch of the Bus Rapid Transport system this coming week.
We applaud this tough stance on lawlessness by the government. As citizens of Mzansi we need to feel that we are not at a mercy of elements who want to have their way by force.

* Reading about what the Barcelona coach - Pep Guardiola - told his players before the Champion's League final against Manchester United earlier this year. He was quoted in a soccer magazine called CHAMPIONS( August/September issue). In an article entitled 'Veni,Vidi,Vici.' by Paul Simpson, Guardiola was said to have told his players to be daring during the game:

" We wanted to say we played and were not being cowards.
There is nothing more dangerous than not taking risks."

I found this pep talk about taking risks very inspirational indeed. And from the way Barcelona defeated Man U, his players must indeed have heeded the coach's advice. Barcelona not only scored goals( 2 to Man U's 0), but they entertained us also.
How many risks do we take in our own personal lives in order to get ahead?

* The arrival of the Feel Good Movement t-shirts this past Friday. These t's were done for us by a company called MBOTANE BUSINESSS SERVICES that specializes in branded corporate wear and gifts. It is a company owned by a lady called Jabu Mabaso.
Needless to say, we are hugely excited here in The FGM. Our message of spreading the good news in our lives has just received another broadcast channel. The Feel Good Revolution can now spread its wings far and wide.

"Much, much love to you Ausi Jabu."

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Safe In Your Arms
_______________

When the earth is shaking.
When the ground we walk on trembles.
We want to feel safe.
Safe in your arms Goromente.
When it is cold.
When it is chilly outside.
We need to know that you are there.
That you are there for us Goromente.
When lawlessness, greed and corruption threaten.
When they threaten to overwhelm us.
We need your shield.
We need your protection.
Tell us that the law will take its course
And indeed it must.
So far so good Goromente.
We feel safe.
Safe in your arms.

Tutu's Admission, bo-Samuele of PNA, And Our Customers Having Their Say

* Archbishop Desmond Tutu acknowledging that he was wrong about the suitability of Mr Jacob Zuma to be the President of our country. He was quoted in THE TIMES newspaper( 19/08/09) as saying President Zuma: "..connects more easily with people than his predecessor." The 'Arch' had expressed grave concerns about Zuma's presidency before our general elections earlier this year.
For the Archbishop to publicly admit that he may have been wrong in assessing Mr Zuma is an admirable thing indeed. It is a mark of a true leader to come out openly and say " I was wrong."
In this admission the 'Arch' could actually have been speaking for a lot of other people who had the same doubts about Mr Zuma.
And as if this was not enough endorsement of Mr Zuma's tenure so far, recently, political pundits generally agreed that the President had done reasonably well in his first 100 days in office.

* A very friendly staff member at PNA - the stationery shop that is located opposite the MTN outlet here in The Glen mall. His name is Samuel. This gentleman makes my visits to PNA a pleasure. He is always eager to assist customers.
The other day he proved to be highly creative in helping me to use the last rands in my gift voucher shopping debit card. In this instance I had thought that I needed to buy for the exact amount of the remaining balance in the debit card in order to exhaust it, but he made me aware that I have an option of adding my own cash to the debit card balance to make up the total of my purchase.

"Leka moso Ntate Samuele."

* Some really beautiful words from some our customers after we had served them. They write all of this in our Visitors Comments Book. Here are some really
nice ones:

On Bessie Mnisi Mr S. wrote:

"Bessie bent over backwards 4 us to help us get our funds.
She lived up up to your phrase - How can we help you?"

On Linda Dickson Ms K. writes:

"If your bank had 10 more staff like Linda Dickson it would be great.
She is a fine example."

And on Thapelo Ntlhabo Lady B. wrote:

"Absolutely satisfied with Thapelo. He made my day. Very efficient.
Good for you."

Finally, a special 'big up' to Valentine. This came  from our Branch Admin manager - Erika
Kasselman. She said Val is really considerate. Valentine came to work yesterday not being aware that she should have been off. When she was told that she can go home she opted to stay in order to give a fellow department worker a chance to catch up on his work load.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

_____

Show us the way Arch.
Show us the way forward.
When we err,come down hard.
When we do good, sing.
Sing our praises.
Show us the art of smoking.
The art of smoking a peace pipe.
Show us the art of winning a Nobel prize.
Also, show us the art of calling neighbours to order.
The art of calling a spade a spade.
Lead us Arch.
As an elder teach us.
Lecture us on the virtues of having a spouse.
In old age I need my slippers.
I need my slippers brought to me.
Show us the way Archbishop.
Lead us.
And into temptation, lead us not.

The African-ness of the Johannesburg CBD, Giveaways From FIFA's LOC, And FGM Blog Posts Highlighted

* The various, and colourful, influences from around the African continent found in the Johannesburg CBD( Central Business District). One sees it in dress codes, in the languages spoken, or in the music played in here. The Jozi CBD is truly African, and this is something good.
This past Friday morning I ventured into the city centre and was blown away by the music I heard there. Being based outside the city centre work-wise, I rarely go there. On this Friday morning - in the Jourbert/Bree street area - I was greeted by some really beautiful African music. This music - played at full blast - came from a 'smallanyana' shop selling religious artifacts. On inquiring, I was informed that the music was Nigerian gospel by a musician called Blessed Samuel. And this particular song was called ''God Be Praised". I loved how this Nigerian gospel music retained its strong African influences.
I made a note to buy the Blessed one's cd on my next CBD visit.

* Hearing that the LOC and FIFA have decided to give away about 120,000 World Cup 2010 tickets for free. I heard this on the Metro FM's Discovery Sports Centre radio show hosted by Robert Marawa. The LOC CEO-Danny Jordaan - was a studio guest and informed us of this. Mr Jordaan said 40,000 of these tickets will go to the construction workers who built the 2010 World Cup stadiums.
This giving back of sorts by the LOC and FIFA is commendable indeed. I have heard that the workers who are building these stadiums are really working hard to finish them on time. Danny told us - as an example - how he would find the workers busy at work even on Saturdays and Sundays at the Port Elizabeth stadium.
This commitment by the construction workers to make the 2010 World Cup a success made me wonder what I am doing - in my own small way - to make 'our' World Cup a success.

* The pleasure of having one of our FGM blog posts( of 02/08/09) being put up on the Spur Restaurant(The Glen) notice board.
Sometime ago I wrote a post in which I expressed how much I had loved the way I was served at the Spur( The Glen). In particular, the way I was served by Ayanda and Joseph. After I gave these guys each a copy of this post they showed it to their management. Management loved the post and decided to put it up in the restaurant's notice board in the public arena for all and sundry to see.
I was flattered to hear of this.
Thank you Spur people.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Celebrating Our Ladies, Insight into a DC Hearing, And Big Support for Soccer in the USA

* The celebration of Women's Day here in South Africa today.
Every year on this day - a public holiday - we pay homage to the women of Mzansi for their contribution to the liberation of our country from racial oppression.
It was on this day back in 1956 that the women of this country marched to Pretoria to protest against the 'dom pass' law. This was a law that required all black South Africans to carry a 'pass' document at all times.
Here I would like to sing my praises, too, to all the ladies of Mzansi for the many roles in which they still excel even today. Be it as mothers, lovers, friends or fellow workers, you guys still rock.

* Attending a disciplinary hearing for the first time and being really impressed by the whole process. This is despite the fact that a DC hearing subject matter is never comfortable.
I went there to support a colleague and a friend in his hour of need.
I was struck by how fair the process seemed to be. Each side is given ample opportunity to state their case.
The chairman of this particular hearing - Mr James Walsh - did a splendid job in conducting it. He explained clearly how the process works at the beginning. Also, before we moved forward on a particular point he made sure that each side was satisfied. There was no sense of needing to get this thing over and done with quickly.
As if this was not fair enough, at the conclusion of the hearing James asked my friend his opinion on the kind of punishment he should get if found guilty. I nearly fell off my chair at this question.
All in all, 'big up' to FNB for such a fair DC hearing process.

* Evidence that Americans do love soccer after all. This is contrary to the popular opinion that they don't. But it seems the soccer has to be of the right type and style.
It was reported in THE TIMES( 3/8/9) that the recent game between the European Champions-Barcelona - and the local team - L A Galaxy - drew one of the largest crowds. The attendance for this game was estimated at 93 000. This, the report stated, was the largest crowed in a soccer game since the 1994 FIFA World Cup, which the US hosted.
And it is no coincidence that the Americans came to this particular game in droves. The game featured Barcelona - the current finest exponents of how the beautiful game should be played. Barca's style of playing plus the star power of the David Beckham-inspired L A Galaxy team must have proved irresistible.
For us soccer lovers this sign of a growth in popularity of the beautiful game in the US of A is a  wonderful thing.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Queens, All Of You
______________

Queens,women you are.
Queens of nurturing.
You give us life.
You grow us.
Even on our death beds,
Ravaged by desease.
You are still there.
You are teachers.
Not so much by words.
By your deeds.
Queens of loyalty.
Fiercely loyal to your offspring.
To your lovers.
To a fault sometimes.
Queens.
You are strong.
Physically and mentally.
Ouch! the pain of childbirth.
The pain of an offspring gone astray.
The pain of an abusive partner.
You bear it all.
And grin.
We love these qualities in you.
Queens, women you all are.

'Amakhosi Amahle', Gifts from MOTION PICTURES, And Worthwhile Advice from Iyanla Vanzant

* Our favourite local soccer team - Kaizer Chiefs - putting one over our arch rivals
- Orlando Pirates. In a Vodacom Challenge game on Thursday night, we beat the 'Buccaneers' 4-3 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time.
The Vodacom Challenge comprises of a series of games between the two local giants - Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates - and a team from outside the country. This year's visiting team was Manchester City from the UK.
Our win over Orlando Pirates was a surprise. The 'Buccaneers' are currently one of the hottest teams locally. Last season they missed winning our
Absa Premier League by a whisker. They lost it on a goal difference. Also, they kicked off this challenge by beating Manchester City 2-0 last Saturday.
So, you can imagine the joy of 'Amakhosi' fans at this beating of the 'hot' 'Amabakabaka'.
And we were not done. Kaizer Chiefs went on to beat the visitors - Man City - in
yesterdays final, thereby winning the Vodacom Challenge Cup.

''Halala Amakhosi."

* Us here at  FNB The Glen branch getting an unexpected gift from the film making company-MOTION PICTURES. This is the company that came to shoot a movie/dvd on our premises sometime back( see our 28th June 2009 post).
Motion Pictures gave each of those of us who took part in this shoot - as bit actors - a R500 gift voucher for spending in any shop in The Glen mall.
It was really nice of Motion Pictures to do this. But, I say, they need not have taken the trouble. Being part of a 'movie shoot' is a priceless experience in itself. We would have gladly done it for free.

"You guys can come back anytime."

* Reading one of the finest pieces on the principle of gratitude in the July issue of the TRUELOVE magazine. It was in a column called - True Spirit - by Iyanla Vanzant.
You will normally hear people saying we need to express gratitude for this or that in our lives, but they never give you much detail as to how this gratefulness will help us, or how to exactly express it. Ms Vanzant gave us the lot in this piece.
Here is an excerpt from one of her steps on how to improve one's life:

" Step 7:BE GRATEFUL
Gratitude is the glue that will attract all the things that you desire. It sends a signal to the universe that you are ready to receive. And the more gratitude you express; the more you will receive to be grateful for.
Spend a minimum of 10 minutes a day writing down the things you are grateful for. Each statement must be charged with emotion. Be clear about your blessings and express your gratitude to the universe.
If you can create an air of genuine gratitude, you will be richly rewarded with many delightful, powerful and unexpected changes. "

We are indeed grateful for this insight, Ms Vanzant.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

It's Not For Nothing.
________________

It's not for nothing Amakhosi.
It's not for nothing that we love you.
You are the most successful in Mzansi.
Your cabinet is laden.
Laden with trophies.
It's not for nothing.
That you are the most supported.
Your winning ways are 'crowd pleasers'.
Corporate S A knows loves this too.
Standard Bank, Vodacom, Nike.
They all are close.
It's not for nothing Amakhosi.
You are the best managed team.
'Chencha' Guluva: nice one.
A rich history of greats too.
Bo-Teenage Botsotso; Bo-Waga-Waga.
Bo-Jeff Butler.
Or even Bo-'The Lip' Nene.
It's not for nothing Amakhosi Amahle.
That we adore you.
Let the 'peace sign' reign.

Birthday of a Giant, End of the Construction Workers' Strike, And Wesbank's Street Car Race in Soweto

* This weekend marking the birthday of Nelson Mandela. Yesterday( 18th July) 'Madiba' turned 91 years of age.
The fact that Mandela's birthday is being celebrated around the world is an indication of the stature of our former President in the world's eyes.
In leading the struggle for the liberation of our country Mr Mandela became a role model for leaders everywhere. And once in office, his preaching of forgiveness and reconciliation inspired the world to no end.
Not only that. Long after leaving politics Mr Mandela continues to champion causes that alleviate human suffering through projects like the '46664 Campaign'.
We would like to add our voice to the chorus of Happy Birthday messages to a
giant:

"May you live to a 100 years Tata."

* The 1 week strike in the construction industry coming to an end at last.
The striking workers got a 12% wage increase, which was slightly lower than their original demand of 13%.
We are just all relieved that now work on the 2010 FIFA World Cup projects can be continued. Work on the soccer stadiums and the Gautrain can now carry on.
One is sometimes tempted to suggest that all crucial industries related to the 2010 FIFA World Cup should not be a subject of industrial action. But striking, if wage demands are not met, is prerogative of all workers. And we should all respect this right.

* Our township of Soweto hosting the Wesbank Street Race this weekend. This race takes place today, along the Chris Hani Road( the old Old Potch), next the University of Johannesburg Soweto campus.
It is the second time Soweto is hosting the Wesbank Super Series race. The inaugural one took place in November 2008.
As the name 'street race' says, racing cars with V8 engines, and motorbikes, race along the streets of Soweto.
The thrill for me is in seeing an event that would normally be held in the northern suburbs come to Soweto. This race brings a buzz and some excitement to our 'kasi'.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

On Your Birthday 'Tata'
____________________

On you birthday Madiba.
We say we know freedom.
We now have our voices.
We are now citizens of the world.
And it all is due to you.
And your comrades.
On your birthday 'Tata'.
What would Mzansi be without you?
What would the world be?
A less inspiring place no doubt.
On your birthday Rolihlahla.
We want to say live long.
Continue to inspire us.
Continue to inspire the world.
'Ta' for the 67 years.
'Ta' Tata.

The King of Pop Remembered, Excellent Service Advisors, And Tips on Blogging from the 'ROOTS' magazine.

* The moving memorial service for the late King of Pop - Michael Jackson. This event, held at the Staples Centre on Tuesday, was televised to a world-wide audience.
It was touching to see all those luminaries sing the praises of Michael Jackson. From fellow musicians, actor friends, preachers and people from politics, they all weighed in.
What stood out for me in this event was learning that Michael Jackson's favourite song was not actually one of his own compositions, but was a song called 'Smile' - a Charlie Chaplin composition. A tear-filled Ms Brooke Shields let us in on this fact.
Even more awesome though was having Michael's brother - Jermain Jackson - later perform this very song for us. It was a heart-wrenching performance this. At one stage I thought Jermain was going to break down, but he managed to finish the song. It cannot have been easy for him.
A line from this song speaks for all the 'positive thinkers' out there. It goes something like:

" Smile, though your heart is breaking."

As they say: "You may be gone MJ, but you will never be forgotten."

* Reading a few tips from the current issue(July '09) of the "Roots" magazine on how to be good when it comes to blogging. Blogging is the keeping of an internet
journal/diary that is updated regularly. Much like what we are doing here with this Feel Good Movement website.
In an article entitled "Bla,bla BLOG", FNB's internet and social media specialist
Andy Hadfield listed a few things that one must consider if one wants to start blogging and become good at it.
I loved the following 4 tips in particular:

"
1.What's your message?
Do you want to communicate a particular message? Starting a blog just for fun
could be a waste of time.
2.Are you disciplined?
Blogs require regular attention. Can you motivate yourself to write something
new every day/week/month?
3.Do you have time?
In addition to your writing commitment, you'll need to moderate comments, respond to reader questions, read other bloggers' posts and network with other bloggers.
4.Do you enjoy reading?
Andy says he spends more time reading each day than writing. Do you have that
time and commitment? "

Some excellent advice indeed.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Ek Se` MJ
_________

Your music MJ.
A soundtrack to a generation.
BEN.
OFF THE WALL.
THRILLER.
Who hasn't bobbed to the beats in here.
Your trendsetting style MJ.
Anyone for a 'moonwalk' dance?
Anyone for 3/4 pants with white socks?
Your eccentricities too MJ.
But what genius is not?
That was you MJ.
A showbiz kid to the core.
And what a show.
Thank you MJ.
A special 'THANKS' for "Billy Jean".
The best dance track ever done.
Thanks for the memories.

Best Ever Confed Cup, Innovator Workshops, And the 1st of July

* By all accounts the Confederations Cup tournament that we recently hosted here in South Africa was one of the better ones. Some( Irvin Khoza, chairman of the LOC) have even gone as far as to say it was the best Confed Cup ever.
One thing is for sure though, this tournament was well organised. The games flowed smoothly from one to the next. Bar a few hiccups with the 'park and ride' facility, I think we can pat ourselves on the back for putting up a good show.
The football itself also dazzled. Who can forget minnows USA's 2-0 thumping of Spain( the no 1 ranked soccer nation in the world) in the semis. What about Brazil's come back against the very USA in the final. From being 0-2 down at half time the samba boys went on to eventually win the game 3-2.
And Brazil were the deserved winners of the this tournament. They just seem to possess this incredible will to win .This is probably why they are 5 times World
Champions.
We could all learn something from Brazil's never-say-die attitude.

* Attending the Innovators Annual Conference at FNB's Training Centre in Sandton this past Thursday(01/07/09).
This conference brought together nominated leaders and champions of innovation from the various branches and divisions within the FNB group.
We got to learn the 'hows' of innovation in this gathering.
The highlight for me was the address by our CEO - Michael Jordaan. Mr Jordaan
emphasized the importance of innovation in any business concern. He said the way things are changing in today's business world is unbelievable. He left us with one of these gem quotes:
" Everything keeps changing at an increasing rate."

It was a pleasure, too, to meet Bo-Mpho( the shoulder massage lady expert) and Bo-Omphile( the man from Rustenburg) in this conference. Much love to you guys.

* The start of the July month this week.  The 1st of July means we are now starting to slowly leave the cold season behind.
Yes, it may still be cold now. And it may get even colder as we move further into
July. But the move away from the winter season has started. After the end of this month we are on our way towards Summer( through Spring of course), which happens to be my favourite season.
'Woza Summer.
Woza Summer time."

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

They Were Here.
______________

The stars were here.
'Kaka' was here.
Real Madrid's new sensation.
He was here in flesh and blood.
Xavi was here.
Barcelona's stalwart.
And a champ of Europe.
Fernando Torres was here too.
The blonde bombshell from Liverpool.
He was here.
All the stars were here, ladies and gents.
And so were Mzansi citizens.
In their numbers.
Great football was here.
The Brazilian samba came too.
In all its glory.
And it made hay.
They were all here.
And so was the best Confed Cup ever.

Movie Shoot Experiences, World Class Goals, And A Heartening Gesture From Tebogo.

*    A spotlight being shone on our branch( The Glen mall) this past week. We experienced some 'lights, camera and action'. A company called MOTION PICTURES came to shoot a movie in our branch this past Wednesday and Thursday. This movie was actually a DVD meant for internal training purposes.
We - as staff - had bit parts to play in it. And I must admit that  I loved being part of this movie shoot experience. The many 'takes', the 'clap its' and the occasional fluffing of 'lines', were an eye-opener for. Now I know what it takes to be an actor. The pressure to say your lines correctly when the camera is on you, is unbelievable. One simple line which you can easily say when not on camera gets you tongue-twisted when the cameras start rolling.
I have a new respect for all the actors out there after walking in their shoes this
week. Having said that, I must say I admire how patient the director - Mr Kobus Swart - was with all of us. Through all those many re-takes he never lost his 'cool' even once. The main actress in our scene - Dierdre Van Rooy - did well with her part too. She had to do several different readings in the script. And she 'represented'.
As for the branch staff in our scene, I must give my praise to Valentine. She was the Queen of all the '1-liners'. She must have said her line( "So, that was my day.") more than 10 times through the re-takes and yet she never fluffed it even once. 'Nice one' as well to the other '1-line' colleague - Laurinda( our branch manager).

* South Africa may have failed to make it to the final of the Confederations Cup
final, but Bafana Bafana can hold their heads high. They made Brazil - the 5 times World Champions - sweat for their 1-0 victory.
But what about this goal that sank Bafana. The Daniel Alves free kick was from the top, top drawer of free kicks. It was a marvel to watch. The technique was world class.
The ball curled around the man wall as if it was going outside, then it came back to sail past our goalkeeper's outstretched left arm and went into the right hand corner of the net. Awesome!
To lose to a goal like this is no shame.

* Being a receipient of an act of magnanimity from my street neighbour here in my
'kasi'(Protea North). Her name is Tebogo.
The other Monday(of the the wildcat taxi strike here in Soweto) I 'bumped' into her in our street in the morning as I made my way to the bus stop. She was going back home. She informed me that there were no taxis because of a taxi strike. She had been to the bus stop herself and they had waited for taxis for ages, in vain.
It was the first time I had heard of this taxi strike. And I was not too pleased. On the very first day that I was going back to work after an annual leave there was suddenly the possibility that I may not even report for duty due to lack of transport.
But Tebogo not only gave me an insight into a potential transport problem, she also provided me with a solution to it. She had decided to go and fetch her car at home and use it to get to work, and she offered me a lift to town( Johannesburg CBD) in it.
Along the way we were picking up some of her friends who were stranded too.
This generosity of spirit from Tebogo took my breath away.
"May you be blessed in all your endeavours, my sister."

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Now We Know
___________

We know now.
Acting is not as simple.
We know now that actors work hard.
We know now what performance anxiety is.
Now we know.
Why a 30-minute soapie takes a whole day to shoot.
Why a patient director is a blessing.
Now we know why this is called work.
We know now.
Hats off to you.
You the greats of acting.
The De Niros of the silver screen.
The Denzils of this world.
Hats off too.
To the new kids on the block.
The Dierdres.
The Valentines.
Now we know.

'Pharoahs' Making Africa Proud, Vodacom's Megs Gift, And Emails from bo-Makgauta

* The Egyptian soccer team - 'The Pharoahs' - giving us Africans something to shout about. Their performance so far in the Confederations Cup tournament, being held here in South Africa, has been a revelation. They first gave 5 times World Champions - Brazil - a big fright. 'The Pharoahs' came back from trailing 1-3 to score 2 goals in 15 minutes and level matters at 3-3.Unluckily, they conceded a late penalty and ended up losing 3-4. But an African country putting 3 goals past Brazil was wonderful to witness.
And 'The Pharoahs' were not done. In their next game they went on to beat the reigning World Champions-Italy - by 1-0.
'The Pharoahs' are the real deal, ladies and gentlemen.

* Vodacom - our local cellphone network provider-handing out free internet airtime to its subscribers. For all purchases of between 5 megs and 250 megs one gets an extra 25 megs for free. And from 500 megs upwards one gets an additional 10% of this purchase for free.
As a Vodacom subscriber who buys internet airtime from them, I had been unaware of this 'free internet'- as they call it .But I had been pleasantly surprised at how long my internet airtime-purchased weekly - was lasting these days. The penny dropped recently when Vodacom splashed this fact of 'free internet' all over the Sunday newspapers.
For small time purchasers of internet airtime the free extra 25 megs represent a
substantial saving. To buy 20 megs and get more than twice this amount extra for free is awesome, I think.
All I can say is: "Nice one Voda."

* Getting this laugh-till-you-drop email from 'khaitseli' Makgauta Khoetsa:

"
IGNORANCE KILLS
_________________

Training is very important no matter what job you do.

There was a case in the Johannesburg Hospital's ICU, where patients died in the
same bed, every Sunday morning at 11 am regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled doctors and some even thought that that particular bed was the work of the Devil. Why the deaths on Sunday morning at 11 am? A world-wide team of experts was constituted and these experts decided to go to the ward to investigate .So on the morning of the next Sunday, a few minutes before 11 am, all doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see for themselves what this terrible phenomenon was all about.

Some were holding wooden crosses, prayer books, and other holy objects to ward off evil spirits. Just then the clock struck 11 and.............

Precious Tshabalala( part-time cleaner) walked in, unplugged the life support
machine and plugged in the vacuum cleaner. "

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

The Pharoahs, They Reign.
_____________________

They reign supreme.
The reigned over Africa.
Reigned 2 times in a row.
They reign, the Pharoahs.
Setting the Confed Cup alight.
Raising the African flag.
Shining a bright, bright light on our continent.
What 'dark' continent?
The Pharoahs.
They reign.
They rained on Brazil.
Giving Kaka & Co food for thought.
Put one over World Champs - Italy.
These Pharoahs, they reign.
Who is next?
The Spanish Armada?
The men from home to the Sphinx.
From home to the Pyramids.
From home to origins of Man's civilization.
They will reign.
The Pharoahs.
They shall reign forever, and ever.

One Year To FIFA's World Cup, KAYA FM's Mesia Gumede, And 'Mandela Day'

* The past week marking exactly 1 year to go before the start of FIFA's 2010 World Cup here in South Africa. This '1 - year - to - go' is being marked by many countdowns and general excitement here in Mzansi. There was President Jacob Zuma kicking off a a soccer ball at the Green Point stadium in Cape Town to symbolically start the countdown. Then there were numerous radio stations that also did countdowns on air at 16.00hrs. The first game will start at this time next year on 11th June.
All of this buzz around next year's soccer event is wonderful of course. It means the people of Mzansi are ready to host the world.
More importantly though, this fanfare celebrating this '1 - year - to - go' moment means that there is no going back. The FIFA 2010 World Cup is coming to South
Africa. There is no plan B, as Danny Jordaan( CEO of the LOC) likes to put it.
All those skeptics who doubted our ability to host this event can eat their
words now.
We say:"Bring it on FIFA".

* The late night DJ on KAYA FM on week days. His name is Mesia Gumede, and he comes on between 10pm and 1am. I have grown to like Mr Gumede's taste in music. This brother has got soul. And it is not as if he is not playing what is on KAYA FM'S playlist. I guess it is the way he chooses what to play on his show from this playlist. It has to do with his selections and favourites, which are a little different. They are more soulful.
From my side I want to say 'big up' Mesia for making us love songs like Raphael Saadiq's "Never gonna give you up" - featuring the legendary Mr Stevie Wonder on the harmonica; Thembisile's "Buti ushadile"( a personal, personal favourite this one); Joe's "Take it off", and off late Avante's beautiful rendition of "Sailing"- a Christopher Cross classic this.

"Thank you Mr Gumede."

* The big honour bestowed on our own struggle icon - Nelson Mandela - by Presisent Jacob Zuma in his state of the nation address recently. He officially declared 18th July - which is Mandela's birthday - a Mandela Day. This day is going to be a working holiday like World Aids Day( 1st December) for example. On this day the citizens of this world are encouraged to take 67 minutes off their day and use this time to help a charity of their choice in their communities. The number 67 comes from the 67 years that Mandela spent active in politics.
This honour could not have been to a more deserving figure. Mr Mandela's
commitment - even to the extent of being prepared to die for his cause - to freeing our
country from racial oppression was exemplary indeed.
This  total commitment to a cause is inspirational too. We can all do with this kind of commitment in achieving our own personal goals, I strongly believe.

THANK YOU UNIVERSE. THANK YOU FOR OUR 'FEEL GOOD MOMENTS'.

Our FEEL GOOD poem of the week:

One Year To......
_____________

One year it is.
One year exactly to FIFA's big party.
A year to FIFA's fest here in Mzansi.
One year it is.
One year to us hosting the world.
A year to us becoming the centre of attention.
Us becoming a bride.
One year to Msanzi coming of age.
One year of anticipation.
We are trembling inside.
It is a tremble of happiness.
A shake of joy.
One year to a dream of a nation coming true.
A dream of a continent materialising.
One year it is.
We can't wait.
The clock ticks.
One year to...
One year until....
Let this party.
Let this FIFA fest.
Let it come.
Lets get this party started.
